XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mazda MX-6 1988-1992

The first-generation Mazda MX-6 GD sits on the same long-wheelbase chassis as the 626, and on a stage that means one thing: a softly-sprung coupe that wants to roll onto its outside-front shoulder the moment grip turns to gravel. The Gravel Rally coilover is built around that reality. It is not a track damper raised on packers – it is a long-travel, high-flow shock with spring rates and damping curves chosen for loose surfaces, jumps and the kind of repeated compression hits that pulp a standard road strut.

For a 1988-1992 MX-6 being prepped for stage, hill-rally or gravel sprint use, this is the coilover that lets the car actually use its weight transfer instead of fighting it. Front-end bite improves because the damper finally controls the nose, and the rear can be set to rotate on lift rather than push wide.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mazda MX-6

On gravel, the MX-6’s 1100kg-ish kerb weight works for you only if the suspension can keep the tyres planted between hits. The Gravel Rally spec runs softer-than-tarmac spring rates with significantly more compression travel, so the chassis absorbs ruts and crests without bottoming into the bump-stops. Damping is tuned for repeated big inputs – the kind of cycle that overheats a road damper inside two stages. You get adjustable ride height to set rally-spec ground clearance, pillowball top mounts where the platform allows for sharper steering response, and damping you can soften for rougher stages or firm up for fast forest sections. The result is a GD MX-6 that finally tracks straight over washboard and turns in cleanly on a loose surface instead of pushing into the scenery.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s loose-surface specification – a long-stroke monotube damper paired with rally-rate springs and external adjustment. Construction is a one-piece monotube with a large-bore piston, sized for the heat and oil-shear of repeated high-energy compression cycles. Spring rates are set lower than the tarmac equivalents to allow the chassis to work into the surface, and the damping curve is biased toward high compression travel control rather than low-speed body composure. Height adjustment is via lower-bracket threading rather than spring-perch winding, so preload stays where you set it after a stage of hard hits. The kit is intended for cars that see gravel, mixed-surface or rally-sprint use, not road work.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-6 (1988-1992)

This kit fits the first-generation GD MX-6 (chassis MA26) sold between 1988 and 1992, covering the 2.2 carb, 2.2 fuel-injected and 2.2 turbo variants on the long-wheelbase platform shared with the 626 GD. Fitment is to the factory strut and damper locations, with no bodyshell modification required.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
