The first-generation Mazda MX-6 (GD chassis, 1988-1992) shares its bones with the 626 of the same era – a front-wheel-drive coupe with MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear that was clever for its day but tuned soft for grand-touring duty. Three and a half decades on, the factory dampers are long past their sell-by date, and the bushes are usually worse. The XYZ Racing Super Sport coilover is built for owners who want to keep a tidy GD on the road without accepting another set of fading OEM-replacement struts.
Super Sport sits at the fast-road end of the XYZ catalogue: a 32-way adjustable monotube damper with height-separate spring perches, designed for daily use with the option to firm up for a weekend B-road run or an occasional trackday. On a light, low-slung 1980s coupe like the MX-6, that adjustability is the point.
What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mazda MX-6
Stock GD-platform MX-6s roll noticeably on turn-in and dive hard under braking – partly chassis design, mostly three decades of tired rubber and worn fluid. The Super Sport replaces both the damper and the spring in one assembly, so you get fresh, linear damping and a stiffer rate without the parts-bin compromise of mixing lowering springs onto worn struts. The 32 clicks of damping let you run softer on the road and firmer when the surface improves. Ride height is set at the perch, not the spring, so you can drop the car visually without losing usable stroke or kerb clearance over the GD’s modest 195/65 tyre profile. The end result is a car that turns in flatter, settles after a mid-corner bump instead of hopping, and stops without nose-diving into the bump-stops.
About the Super Sport coilover
The Super Sport is XYZ Racing’s fast-road-biased monotube. The damper body is one-piece for thermal stability under repeat compression cycles, with 32 detented positions on a single adjuster that alters both bump and rebound together – useful on an older platform where you want to feel changes quickly without the chassis time of a four-way kit. Spring rates are matched to the GD’s kerb weight and weight distribution rather than dropped in from a generic catalogue, and the height-adjustable lower mount lets you set static ride height independently of the spring’s preload. Pillowball top mounts are fitted where the original platform allows; rubber-isolated mounts are used where NVH would be unacceptable on the road. Camber adjustment is via the top mount where the chassis geometry supports it.
Fitment for the Mazda MX-6 (1988-1992)
This kit fits the first-generation Mazda MX-6, GD platform, chassis code MA26, model years 1988 through 1992. It covers the front-wheel-drive coupe variants of that generation. Confirm your chassis tag matches MA26 before ordering – the later GE-platform MX-6 (1992 on) is a different fitment.
