XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda MX-6 1988-1992

The first-generation Mazda MX-6 GD shares its bones with the 626 of the same era, which means a soft, comfort-biased FWD platform that was never meant to be hustled. Owners running the 2.2-litre F2 turbo or the naturally aspirated 2.5 V6 know the story: roll, dive, and a vague front end that washes wide the moment you ask anything of the OEM struts.

The Tarmac Rally coilover is the harder-edged answer for a GD that gets driven properly. It is built for sealed-surface stage work and fast B-road use where the road surface is broken, cambered and rarely smooth – exactly the environment a left-field choice like a 30-year-old MX-6 tends to live in.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mazda MX-6

Drop a Tarmac Rally kit into a GD-chassis MX-6 and the body control transforms before you have even adjusted anything. Turn-in becomes immediate, the nose stops pitching under braking, and the rear axle starts following the front through long sweeping bends instead of lagging behind it. The 32-step damping range matters here because the F2 and V6 cars sit on the front axle very differently – you can soften the rear to coax rotation on lift, or firm the front to settle a turbo car under boost.

Ride height adjustment lets you sit the car at a sensible rally-spec stance with travel preserved for kerbs and crests, rather than the slammed-and-bottoming look that ruins these older Mazdas. Independent spring-perch adjustment means you do not lose stroke when you correct the ride height.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally sits between XYZ Racing’s gravel-spec and circuit-spec product. It uses a monotube damper body with separated rebound and compression circuits, paired with longer-travel springs than the Circuit Master range. Damping is adjustable across 32 detented clicks from a single knob, with the click range tuned for the broken-surface frequencies you encounter on closed-road events and unsorted UK back roads.

The body is hard-anodised aluminium for corrosion resistance, with stainless lower brackets. Spring rates are chosen for tarmac stage use rather than smooth-circuit ballast loads, so the kit stays compliant when a mid-corner ridge would launch a stiffer track-spec coilover off the road. It is the right tool for a road-rally-style MX-6, not a slammed show car.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-6 (1988-1992)

This kit is built specifically for the GD-chassis Mazda MX-6 produced between 1988 and 1992, covering both the 2.2 turbo (F2T) and 2.5 V6 (KL-DE) variants on the MA26 platform. Front and rear units are supplied as a complete four-corner set with the correct top mounts for the GD’s strut and lower-link layout.
