XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mazda MX-6 1988-1992

The first-generation MX-6 (GD platform, MA26 chassis) was Mazda’s front-drive coupe built off the 626 floorpan, and three decades on the cars that survive tend to live one of two lives: cherished low-mileage survivors, or hard-driven club cars being kept honest by owners who refuse to let a clean GD rot. Either way, the original struts gave up long ago, and replacement options on a 35-year-old Japanese coupe are not exactly thick on the shelf.

This is where the XYZ Racing Racing Spec coilover earns its place. It is the firmer end of the XYZ range – built for circuit use and serious fast-road work – and it gives the GD-chassis MX-6 a proper, adjustable, rebuildable damper setup where the alternative is a worn OEM strut or a budget lowering kit that ruins the geometry.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Mazda MX-6

Drop a Racing Spec set under a GD MX-6 and the first thing the chassis stops doing is wallowing. The original front-strut, rear-multi-link layout was tuned for 1980s comfort; with monotube dampers and matched spring rates the front end starts loading cleanly into a corner instead of rolling onto its outside shoulder. Ride-height adjustment lets you set the car so the wishbones and trailing arms work in their intended arc rather than at the steep angles a generic lowering spring imposes. 30-way damping adjustment means you can run the car firm enough for a track day and back it off for the road home without changing parts. Body roll, dive under braking, and squat off the line all come down, and the steering finally tells you what the front tyres are doing.

About the Racing Spec coilover

XYZ Racing’s Racing Spec sits in the harder-biased half of the range, aimed at owners who want a dedicated handling setup rather than a comfort compromise. Construction is monotube, with a large-diameter piston and pillow-ball upper mounts that remove the rubber compliance of an OEM top hat – useful on a chassis as old as the GD, where the original mounts will be tired regardless. Spring rates are pitched for circuit and aggressive fast-road duty, and the damper is fully rebuildable, which on a 1988-1992 application matters more than headline figures: this is a part you can service and keep, not a sealed unit you throw away. Ride height adjusts on the lower bracket so preload stays correct, and the 30-click dial covers a wide enough window to suit road-biased and track-biased setups from the same hardware.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-6 (1988-1992)

This kit fits the first-generation Mazda MX-6 on the GD platform, chassis code MA26, model years 1988 to 1992. It is built around the original front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link geometry, replacing both axles as a four-corner set.
