Where a circuit coilover assumes a relatively smooth, predictable surface, the Tarmac Rally is valved to deal with the impact of an uneven road at speed – the big single hit of a compression, the rapid succession of mid-corner ridges, the kerb strike on the exit of a junction. The damping is set up to suppress unwanted body movement after that impact rather than letting the chassis float on its springs, which is what keeps the tyre in contact with the surface and the car pointing where you steered it.
