XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Chrysler PROWLER 1997-2002

The Prowler is an unusual canvas for a gravel rally damper, and that is precisely the point. Chrysler’s aluminium-intensive retro roadster carries most of its mass over the front axle, runs a short 113-inch wheelbase, and was originally tuned for boulevard cruising on tarmac with 17-inch fronts and 20-inch rears. Strap a stage-spec coilover onto it and you are rewriting the brief entirely – turning a hot-rod styling exercise into something that can absorb a forest road without folding the lower control arms.

For a Prowler being prepped for loose-surface use, club rallycross, or the kind of bespoke build where the owner wants stage-grade compliance under a road car, the Gravel Rally spec is the one that earns its keep. Long stroke, long spring, generous bump travel – none of which the factory dampers were ever asked to deliver.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2002 Chrysler Prowler

The headline change is travel. Gravel dampers run a much longer stroke than the tarmac kits, and that extra travel is what lets a low-slung roadster like the Prowler ride down into a rutted surface rather than skipping off the top of it. The inverted-tube layout puts the larger-diameter outer body at the top of the strut, where bending loads from the wishbone are worst, so the shaft sees less side-load when the front end is being pummelled by sandstone or compacted snow.

You will feel it as composure where the factory car had brittleness: the nose stays planted under braking into a loose corner, the rear axle stops pattering on washboard, and high-speed crests no longer unload the chassis into a long float. Spring rates set by XYZ’s own rally testing programme mean the car squats progressively under G-load rather than collapsing to the bump stops mid-corner.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is a purpose-engineered rally damper, not a road kit with extra travel bolted on. The construction is inverted-tube – a layout XYZ Racing specifies for gravel and rallycross because it survives the side-loading that destroys conventional monotube shafts on loose surfaces. The use case is the most aggressive in the company’s range: sandstone, snow, silt, and the high-speed bouncy sections where a damper has to absorb the hit AND brace against lateral G when the driver turns in on a slippery apex.

Long stroke and long spring are the two non-negotiables for gravel work, and both are present here. The springs themselves are not generic catalogue rates – XYZ states they are tested and validated by working rally racing teams, with rates chosen for the platform rather than picked from a generic table. That matters on a car as light and oddly-balanced as the Prowler, where running a stiff tarmac rate would just spit the chassis off the surface.

Fitment for the Chrysler Prowler (1997-2002)

Built for the CR04-chassis Prowler across the full 1997-2002 production run, including the late Plymouth-badged cars and the Chrysler facelift. This covers both the original 3.5-litre and the later high-output variant. Confirm strut top hardware and brake-line routing against your specific car before install – Prowler aftermarket support is thin and you will want eyes on the geometry before committing.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
