XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mazda 626 1987-1992

The GD-chassis Mazda 626 is a front-driver from an era when Mazda was still chasing the sport-saloon brief with a light kerb weight and a willing F-series four. Three and a half decades on, the standard struts have given up, the rubber has crumbled, and the car sits on its bumpstops over anything more aggressive than a cat’s eye. The XYZ Racing Racing Spec coilover is the answer for owners who want their 626 driving the way the chassis was originally laid out to – flat, controlled, and properly damped.

Racing Spec is the harder end of XYZ’s range. It is aimed at circuit work and aggressive fast-road use rather than commuting, with higher spring rates and stiffer valving than the Street or Super Sport tiers. On a car as light as the GD 626, that translates into a genuinely sharp turn-in.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1992 Mazda 626

You get back the body control the 626 lost to 30 years of fatigued dampers and sagging springs. Front-end dive under braking is reined in, mid-corner roll is cut to the point where the outside front tyre actually stays loaded, and the rear stops floating over crested A-roads. Adjustable damping lets you run a stiffer setup for a track day and back it off for the drive home, without changing parts. Height adjustment from the lower bracket – not by preloading the spring – means you can drop the GD’s ride height for stance and corner-weight without losing usable suspension travel. For a chassis this old, the biggest single change is simply having dampers that resist properly again; everything the 626 does on turn-in improves from that alone.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec uses a monotube damper with separate spring and ride-height adjustment, so changing how low the car sits does not change how much the springs are preloaded. Damping is adjustable across 30 clicks on a single knob, controlling bump and rebound together – simple to live with, quick to set up at the side of a paddock. Spring rates are pitched harder than XYZ’s Super Sport tier, with pillowball top mounts at the front for direct steering feel and reduced flex through the strut top. The construction is built to be serviced rather than replaced: dampers can be rebuilt and revalved, and spring rates can be specified at order. For a 1987-1992 626 this matters – parts support for the platform is thin, and a coilover you can refresh on a bench beats a sealed strut you have to bin in three years.

Fitment for the Mazda 626 1987-1992

Built for the GD-chassis Mazda 626, internal code MA17, covering model years 1987 to 1992 across saloon, hatch, and coupe bodies. Confirm your specific trim and drivetrain in the configurator before ordering – the GD ran through several minor running changes across its life.
