XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mazda 626 1987-1992

The GD-generation Mazda 626 was never built with a stage rally in mind, but its longitudinal-ish layout, MacPherson front and well-located rear made it a quietly capable platform for owners who saw past the saloon-car badge. Decades on, the cars that survive are the ones being used – hillclimb, gravel club rounds, retro rally regularity events – and the standard dampers were exhausted before most of them turned ten. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the 1987-1992 Mazda 626 is the spec sheet that puts a tired MA17 chassis back on a useful set of legs.

This is the loose-surface variant of the XYZ range, with longer stroke, softer base rates and damper valving set up for compliance over crested gravel rather than circuit flatness. For a 626 being campaigned on forest stages or used hard on broken UK back-roads, it is the version that actually makes sense.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1992 Mazda 626

The first thing you feel on a GD 626 with fresh gravel-spec dampers is travel – the standard car runs out of bump stroke very quickly on a compressed crest, and the rebound is usually long gone. With the longer-stroke shock body and recalibrated valving, the front axle stays loaded through a yump landing instead of skipping sideways. The 30-way damping adjustment is the practical headline: soften it for the gravel-and-mud regularity events the 626 ends up doing, then wind it firmer for the tarmac liaison sections without ever touching the spring perch. Height adjustment via the lower bracket – rather than thread preload – keeps the spring working through its full range, which matters on a 35-year-old chassis where every millimetre of compliance counts. Pillowball top mounts sharpen turn-in, useful on a nose that has always wanted to push wide on lift-off.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally spec is a monotube, 30-level damping-adjustable coilover built specifically for unsealed-surface use. The damper body uses a larger-than-standard piston for heat capacity over long stages, and the gas charge is set for high-frequency rebound recovery on washboard gravel rather than flat-circuit response. Spring rates are softer than the road-going Super Sport or Circuit Master variants in the same range, with longer free length to suit increased ride height and stroke. Bracket-style ride-height adjustment separates corner weight from preload, so the car can be raised for a rough event or dropped for a tarmac round without re-springing. Pillowball upper mounts replace the rubber-bushed standard tops, removing the deflection that masked steering inputs on the original 626 set-up. Build is rebuildable – service kits and revalves are available rather than a single sealed life.

Fitment for the Mazda 626 (1987-1992)

This kit is specified for the GD-generation Mazda 626, chassis code MA17, covering the 1987 through 1992 model years. It is a direct-fit coilover replacement using the original mounting points front and rear, with no chassis modification required. Confirm your exact trim and drivetrain at checkout – the GD ran in several variants across that window.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
