XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda 626 1987-1992

The GD-generation Mazda 626 is a softly-sprung front-driver that was set up for comfort in 1987, not for a stage-rally surface in 2026. Owners running these cars hard – and there are still a few doing exactly that on UK club rallies – know the factory struts run out of travel and damping authority long before the chassis runs out of ideas. The Tarmac Rally coilover from XYZ Racing is the answer to that specific problem.

This is a sealed-surface rally kit: built for tight, technical tarmac stages, hillclimbs, and the kind of fast-road driving that hammers a 30-year-old damper into submission within a season. It replaces the entire strut on a 1987-1992 Mazda 626 (MA17 chassis) with a height-adjustable, damping-adjustable unit you can re-valve and rebuild rather than throw away.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1992 Mazda 626

Spring rates and damper authority are the two things the original 626 setup simply doesn’t have for stage use, and the Tarmac Rally addresses both. You get firmer rates matched to a damper curve developed for sealed-surface work, so the front-end stops washing out on turn-in and the back stops floating over compressions. 30-step adjustable damping lets you set the car up softer for transit sections and stiffer for the special stage without touching ride height. Pillowball top mounts replace the rubber upper bushings, sharpening steering response on a platform that was deliberately isolated from the road in period. Ride height is independent of spring preload, so you can corner-weight the car and run the rake the rally surface actually demands.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally sits in the rally side of their range, alongside the Gravel Rally kit, and is purpose-tuned for sealed-surface competition rather than loose terrain. Construction is monotube with a high-pressure gas charge, which gives the consistent damping behaviour you need when the car is being worked corner after corner with no time to cool. Spring rates are spec’d for tarmac use – stiffer than a fast-road kit, but with enough compliance to absorb the broken surfaces you find on UK rally tarmac. The 30-way adjuster is on the damper body, accessible without removing the strut. Bodies are zinc-coated for corrosion resistance and the kit is fully rebuildable and re-valvable through XYZ’s service network.
