XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mazda 626 1987-1992

The GD-generation Mazda 626 is a soft, comfort-biased saloon riding on a chassis that has had three-and-a-half decades to lose whatever damping discipline it left the factory with. Original struts on a surviving 1987-1992 626 are almost certainly past their useful life, and the standard spring rates were tuned for a Japanese executive ride rather than the kind of cornering load most surviving owners now ask of the car.

The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover replaces that tired, vague factory setup with a properly engineered, height-adjustable, damping-adjustable kit aimed at fast-road and occasional circuit use. For a 626 owner running a clean, restored GD on UK B-roads or the odd trackday, this is the suspension end-state.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1992 Mazda 626

The Top Sport gives the 626 a flat, controlled body on turn-in that the standard car simply cannot generate on worn dampers. Stiffer linear springs over a 30-step adjustable damper let you settle the front end through fast sweepers and dial out the mid-corner float the GD is known for. Height adjustment via the lower mount (rather than spring preload) means you can drop the car for stance without losing usable stroke or pre-loading the spring against the bump stop. Pillowball top mounts on the front sharpen steering feel and remove the rubber slop that worn factory bushes introduce. The result is a 626 that responds to inputs you used to have to plan two corners ahead.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport is XYZ Racing’s fast-road / light-track tier, sitting below the Circuit Master and Racing Spec in the range. Construction is a 52mm monotube with a hardened, anti-corrosion-coated piston rod, and the damper uses a single 30-step knob that adjusts compression and rebound together. Spring rates are matched per application and supplied installed; the standard fit is a linear rate calibrated for the 626’s kerb weight and front-drive layout. Lower mounts are forged, with thrust bearings on the front to handle steering load. Camber-adjustable pillowball top mounts come fitted to the front struts as standard, with optional rear camber plates depending on subframe geometry. It is a serviceable, rebuildable damper – not a sealed unit – which matters on a car this age, where you want a part you can keep alive.
