The third-generation Telstar (GD chassis, sold under FO19 in XYZ’s catalogue) is a footnote in UK fast-Ford folklore – a Mazda 626-derived saloon that found a second life with owners who valued its under-the-radar 2.0 and 2.2 platform over the obvious Sierras and Escorts of the same era. Three decades on, the surviving cars are running on suspension that was tired in the late 1990s, and the original strut design was never set up to cope with modern tyre grip.
The XYZ Racing Street Advanced is the right entry point for a Telstar that is still doing daily duty but is being asked to corner properly again. It pairs adjustable damping with road-biased spring rates so the car settles, but without the harshness of a circuit-only kit on a 30-year-old saloon’s shell.
What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Ford Telstar
The first thing you will feel after fitting Street Advanced to an FO19 Telstar is body control returning to a chassis that has spent years floating on collapsed OE dampers. Turn-in tightens, the front no longer washes wide on a trailing throttle, and the rear stops pattering over mid-corner bumps. With 720 damping positions on tap, you can soften the kit off for a long motorway run and firm it back up for a B-road blast without touching ride height. Lowering the car onto the bump-stops is also off the table – height is set independently of spring preload, so you keep full suspension travel even when the stance drops. For a Telstar that sees mixed road use, that combination of adjustability and travel is what makes the kit liveable day to day.
About the Street Advanced coilover
Street Advanced is XYZ Racing’s highest-volume product and the one the factory team has spent the longest developing. It is built for road use and the occasional track day rather than dedicated circuit work, with 720 damping adjustment positions accessed through a single knob at the top of each unit. The kit has been refined through years of testing on the international race programme XYZ runs out of Taiwan, then dialled back to spring and valving settings that work on a public road. Construction is the same monotube architecture XYZ uses across its catalogue, with pillowball top mounts where chassis geometry allows and independent ride-height adjustment via the lower bracket. The result is a coilover that holds up to repeated heat cycling but is not punishing on a long drive.
Fitment for the Ford Telstar (1988-1992)
This kit is mapped to the FO19 chassis Telstar produced from 1988 through to 1992 – the third-generation GD platform sold in the UK and across Asia-Pacific. Confirm your chassis code against the VIN plate before ordering; the earlier and later Telstar generations use different suspension geometry and require separate part numbers.
