XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Ford TELSTAR 1988-1992

The Ford Telstar in FO19 guise is a Mazda 626 underneath, which means an independent rear and a chassis that responds far better to suspension work than its saloon-car styling suggests. The Tarmac Rally coilover targets exactly that latent potential: a damper built to soak up mid-corner ruts, kerb hops and crowned road surfaces without turning the car into a stiff-legged tip-toe down a smooth piece of tarmac.

For a late-eighties Telstar still being campaigned on UK and Irish closed-road stages, the parts shelf is thin. This kit closes a real gap – proper rally-spec damping for an FO19 platform that the wider aftermarket forgot about thirty years ago.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Ford Telstar

A tarmac stage punishes anything that isn’t ready for it. The Tarmac Rally damper is built to swallow sudden bump inputs – kerbs at chicane apexes, broken edges on country B-roads, the lateral kicks you get from cambered Irish tarmac – without unloading the contact patch. That means the front Telstar tyre stays planted when you’re trail-braking into a tightening hairpin instead of skipping outward.

On the way out of corners you’ll feel the rear axle hook up earlier. Body control under longitudinal load improves too, so the Telstar’s relatively soft factory brake feel gains a more progressive bite because the nose isn’t diving onto its bump stops. The car settles faster between transitions, which on a stage with rhythmic left-right-left sequences is the difference between flowing and fighting.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally damper is a sealed-stage tarmac specialist, with valving derived directly from XYZ Racing’s own rally programme. The damper’s job is twofold: absorb the impact when the chassis crosses a significant bump, and suppress the resulting body movement quickly enough that vertical wheel travel stays in usable range. That dual remit is what separates a rally tarmac damper from a circuit coilover, where bump inputs are smaller and more predictable.

Settings are carried over from XYZ’s competition experience on stage rallies, so the baseline tune lands in a competitive window rather than asking the driver to spend a weekend hunting for it. The construction prioritises traction recovery – keeping the contact patch loaded through the kind of disturbed surfaces that would lift a road-biased damper off the tarmac entirely. Stability through fast, broken sections is the headline benefit; predictable handling at the limit is the result.

Fitment for the Ford Telstar (1988-1992)

This kit is built for the FO19-generation Ford Telstar produced between 1988 and 1992. Confirm chassis code on the VIN plate before ordering – the FO19 designation covers the second-generation Telstar shared with the GD-platform Mazda 626 of the same era. Specifications outside this year range are not covered by this listing.
