XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Ford TELSTAR 1988-1992

The GD-chassis Telstar sits in an awkward spot for any owner still running one in 2026: a front-drive Mazda 626 sibling with soft factory damping that was never designed to cope with modern tyres or the kind of B-road pace these cars now get used at. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is the sensible answer – a kit set up for occasional track day work that still has to drive home afterwards.

The Top Sport sits in XYZ’s range as the dual-purpose option: stiffer and more disciplined than a fast-road kit, but tuned with enough compliance that a Telstar owner can still use the car on broken UK tarmac without the fillings rattling out. For an FO19 platform that’s now 34-plus years old, getting the damping right matters more than chasing the lowest possible ride height.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Ford Telstar

The original Telstar damper bushes and struts are long past their service life on any surviving example, and that’s where most of the slop in the car comes from. Dropping in the Top Sport restores body control immediately – turn-in sharpens, the nose stops diving on trail-braking into roundabouts, and the rear settles instead of skipping over mid-corner bumps. Ride height adjustability lets you set the car for the rubber you actually run, rather than living with the factory’s all-wheel-drive-friendly arch gaps. The increased spring rate puts more of the contact patch on the road through fast direction changes, which is exactly what a 1990s front-drive saloon needs to feel modern.

About the Top Sport coilover

XYZ tunes the Top Sport with roughly 30 to 50 per cent more damping force than a street-only kit, and around 2 kg/mm extra spring rate over a comfort setup. The brief is straightforward: absorb the hit from a sharp expansion joint or a kerbed apex, suppress the secondary body movement that follows, and keep the tyre loaded through the impact. That last point is where most budget coilovers fall apart – the spring rate is there but the damper can’t control it, so the car skips and washes wide. The Top Sport settings come out of XYZ’s own track-day development programme and are aimed squarely at aggressive driving on circuit, hillclimbs and quick road work, rather than a stripped race car.
