XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Ford TELSTAR 1988-1992

The GD-platform Telstar arrived in showrooms as a quiet Mazda 626 in a Ford suit, but the cars that survive into 2026 are almost always the ones owners have repurposed for circuit work – and the factory MacPherson front, multi-link rear setup was never specced for that life. Stock dampers fade after a handful of laps, the front end loads up under trail-braking, and ride height becomes a guess once you start running stickier rubber. The Racing Spec coilover answers that directly.

For a Telstar campaigned in clubman saloon racing, sprint events, or time-attack, this is XYZ Racing’s circuit-focused damper – developed off the back of their WTCC-era programme and built for cars that see kerbs and concrete walls rather than commutes.

What this coilover does for your 1988-1992 Ford Telstar

The Racing Spec is engineered around repeat heat cycles, which is where street-orientated coilovers quietly give up on a Telstar with any real tyre on it. Damping settings derived from World Touring Car Championship development mean the valving is biased toward control under heavy braking load and mid-corner crest changes – exactly the inputs the long-wheelbase GD chassis throws at a damper. Ride height adjustment lets you lower the centre of gravity meaningfully on a car that left the factory tall, and the corner-weighted setup capability becomes useful once you start chasing balance on a chassis with a known forward weight bias.

Spring rates appropriate to track use take the slack out of the front end on turn-in, and the rear stays planted under throttle application out of slow corners – the Telstar’s traditional weakness once the OE bushes and dampers are tired.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec is XYZ Racing’s circuit-derived damper, with the valving and spring philosophy taken directly from their participation in racing events including the World Touring Car Championship. It sits at the serious end of the XYZ range, intended for cars that are being built or campaigned for track use rather than being daily-driven with the occasional trackday on top. The platform is designed to accept custom-made shock absorbers for cars running aggressive upgrades – factory racing-vehicle level, A-class racing car level – where buyers can supply detail on installed modifications and target circuit, and XYZ will spec the damper accordingly.

In its standard form it remains a track damper rather than a road-bias product. Construction and adjustment range follow the brief: control under load, repeatable behaviour across a session, and the headroom to be re-valved for a specific build. For a Telstar being prepared for a particular series or circuit, the custom-spec route is the genuine differentiator here.
