XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mazda 626 1998-2002

The GF-generation Mazda 626 is a front-driver from an era when Mazda was still figuring out what it wanted the model line to be – softer than a 323F, less focused than a first-gen MX-6, and saddled with damping that gave up long before the chassis did. Twenty-plus years on, the surviving examples are running on tired struts that allow body roll the chassis was never set up to manage, and that is exactly what the XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover for the Mazda 626 (1998-2002) is built to fix.

Top Sport sits at the circuit end of the XYZ Racing range. It is the kit you fit when you want the 626 to behave like the sharper saloon Mazda always hinted at – flatter through fast direction changes, planted under braking, and finally riding on damping that responds to inputs instead of absorbing them with a delay.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2002 Mazda 626

Installed on a GF 626, the Top Sport coilover transforms how the car loads its outside front tyre. The standard front strut runs out of meaningful damping force well before the front wheel has finished moving, which is why a tired 626 feels vague turning in and wallowy on the exit. Independent height adjustment at each corner lets you correct the nose-up rake these cars develop with age, and the 30-way damping range gives you room to firm up the front end for B-road work without making the rear skip over expansion joints. The result is a saloon that finally turns on its front axle rather than rolling onto its outside front suspension.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport uses a monotube damper body with a piston large enough to manage heat across a track session – the spec the rest of the range borrows from. Damping is 30-way adjustable from a single top-mount knob, so you set rebound and compression in one motion rather than chasing two clickers per corner. Spring rates are matched to the 626’s nose-heavy front-drive layout, and ride-height adjustment is independent of spring preload, which means you can drop the car without pre-loading the springs into a harsh secondary ride. Camber plates are not part of this kit; the GF’s front geometry is set at the lower arm and shouldn’t be chased at the top mount on a road car.

Fitment for the Mazda 626 (1998-2002)

Engineered for the GF-platform Mazda 626 saloon and hatch, chassis code MA19, model years 1998 through 2002. Front-wheel-drive only – this generation never came with the AWD layout of the earlier GD/GE cars in the UK.
