XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda 626 1998-2002

The GF-generation Mazda 626 carries a soft, comfort-biased chassis that was never set up for a stage entry – front MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear that wash into understeer the moment you load the outside front on a loose surface. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover rewrites that brief. It gives the 626 the body control and recovery rate it needs to be driven hard on broken B-roads, tarmac stage surfaces, and the patchy mid-corner bumps that British rally venues are built on.

This is a tarmac-rally specification, not a circuit setup. That distinction matters on the 626 because the GF shell flexes more than a purpose-built rally car, and rates that work on a smooth track will skip the inside wheel on a crested stage corner.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2002 Mazda 626

Spring rates and damping are matched to a surface that punishes the car between corners, not just in them. You get pitch control under late braking into a tightening hairpin, then enough compliance for the front axle to stay loaded over compressions where a stiffer track setup would unload and push wide. Ride height is adjustable independently of spring preload, so corner-weighting the 626 is straightforward once the car is on scales. The 30-step damping range gives a usable spread between recce pace and a competitive stage run, and the rear hardware is geometry-correct for the 626’s multi-link layout rather than a generic strut fit.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally series uses a monotube damper with a larger working oil volume than the road-going XYZ ranges, which keeps damping force consistent when stage temperatures climb. Adjustment is single-knob, 30 clicks, addressing rebound and low-speed compression together – fast to change between service points and forgiving of co-driver involvement. Spring seats and lower mounts are corrosion-treated for the realities of a UK rally calendar, and the kit is supplied at a baseline rate intended as a starting point that competitors then refine to crew weight, tyre choice, and event surface. Camber tops are included where the chassis allows them.
