XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Subaru LEVORG VM 4WD 2014-2020

The Levorg VM’s permanent symmetrical AWD and flat-four boxer layout give it a lower centre of gravity than most estate-bodied rally platforms manage, but the factory dampers were never built to survive a gravel stage. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover replaces them with an inverted-tube damper and a long-stroke, long-spring layout aimed squarely at sandstone, snow and silt – the surfaces that break a conventional damper inside a single stage.

For a VM 4WD running rally cross or gravel-stage events, stroke length matters more than outright stiffness. The Levorg’s estate body carries more unsprung mass over the rear axle than the saloon platforms it shares components with, and it’s the long-travel damper that keeps the wheel following the ground rather than skipping across it at speed.

What this coilover does for your 2014-2020 Subaru LEVORG VM 4WD

On loose surfaces the VM’s symmetrical AWD system is constantly shuffling torque between axles, and body control decides whether that torque turns into forward drive or wheelspin. The inverted-tube design resists the side-loading that a standard tube shock struggles with on washboard gravel, keeping the shim stack behaving consistently through repeated high-speed compression rather than fading mid-stage. Long-stroke travel absorbs chassis vibration from rutted and rocky surfaces before it reaches the car’s inputs, while the extended spring length holds the body level under the G-force loading of a fast rally-cross corner instead of letting the Levorg’s wagon-length wheelbase pitch and wallow. Ride height adjusts independently of spring preload, so the VM can be set for stage clearance without sacrificing the damping range the surface demands.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally range specifically around rally and rally-cross use, where the road surface is more punishing than anything a circuit or fast road throws at a damper. The logic is simple: on a gravel stage the damper does more of the work than almost any other component in the car, because it’s the only thing standing between the chassis and a surface that changes metre to metre. The inverted-tube construction is a direct response to that variability – built to keep working whether the stage is loose sandstone, packed snow or fine silt, rather than tuned for one condition and hoping the rest cooperate. Stroke and spring length are both extended well beyond road-going coilover norms, so the damper can soak up chassis vibration from a rough, bouncy stage at speed and still hold the car together under hard cornering G-force. Every spring rate in the range has been set from data gathered on an actual rally racing programme rather than bench-tested in isolation, which is why the rates land where they do.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
