XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E39 4/6 CYL excl. Wagon 1995-2003

The E39 5 Series carries real weight over a long wheelbase, and on loose gravel that mass keeps travelling long after the chassis has already changed direction underneath it. Standard saloon suspension, softened for motorway comfort, runs out of ideas the moment a stage throws a crest or a compression at speed. The Gravel Rally coilover is built for exactly that mismatch.

For the 4/6-cylinder E39 saloon – excluding the Touring – this kit is aimed at gravel-stage rally and rallycross use, where the car needs to shrug off repeated hard landings without the chassis pitching or the dampers fading halfway through a stage. It replaces the factory strut and spring assembly front and rear with a setup designed to keep the E39’s substantial unsprung mass under control when the surface stops being predictable.

What this coilover does for your 1995-2003 Bmw 5 Series E39 4/6 CYL excl. Wagon

On loose surfaces the E39’s length works against it under trail braking and mid-corner direction changes, so the extra suspension travel here matters more than outright stiffness. Long-stroke damping keeps the wheel following the ground through compressions and crests instead of the chassis skipping across them, which is what actually stops a heavy saloon like this from stepping wide on a fast gravel bend. The long spring works with that travel to absorb vibration transmitted up through the axle on rutted or stony surfaces, rather than passing every impact straight into the body. Under the G-forces generated in quick direction changes on loose ground, the setup is built to hold its line rather than allow the E39’s weight to overwhelm the dampers. The result is a car that keeps its composure over successive rough sections instead of degrading stage by stage as standard dampers heat up and fade.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is a damper built specifically for rally and rallycross use, where the road surface is the most punishing a suspension setup will see in competition. XYZ Racing uses an inverted tube design so the damper can be tuned to cope with the different demands of sand, snow and silt rather than a single fixed surface. Long stroke travel and a correspondingly long spring are the core of the design, giving the shock room to absorb chassis vibration and to deal with repeated high-speed impacts from bouncy, broken ground without running out of movement. That same long-travel setup is what lets the car carry extreme cornering loads on loose surfaces without the suspension bottoming or the geometry collapsing. Spring rates on this kit were set through testing with a rally racing team, so the rates supplied reflect what has actually held up on stage rather than a desk calculation.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
