The E39 5 Series carries its mass low but nose-forward, and on a broken tarmac stage that weight keeps loading onto the outside front corner long after turn-in. The factory dampers were valved for supple motorway compliance, not for a compression that arrives every second lap of a stage over cracked or patched surface, and on a heavier six-cylinder saloon that shortfall shows up as wallow through fast direction changes and a rear axle that unloads on the exit.
The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover for this BM22-chassis 5 Series (1995-2003, 4/6 cylinder, excluding Touring) is built for exactly that job: sealed-stage tarmac rally, where the car takes repeated hard hits from broken surface and camber changes and still needs to put power down cleanly out of the corner. It’s a stage-specific spec, not a fast-road compromise dressed up for competition.
What this coilover does for your 1995-2003 BMW 5 Series E39
Fitted to a BM22 saloon, this coilover controls the body movement that the E39’s long wheelbase and nose-heavy layout naturally invite on a rough tarmac stage – the pitch under braking into a hairpin, the roll through a fast fourth-gear kink. Damping calibrated for repeated big-hit compressions keeps the chassis settled where standard rubber-bushed dampers would start to pack down and skip across broken surface. That control keeps the rear axle loaded through direction changes, which on the E39’s multi-link rear is what actually puts drive down cleanly out of a stage corner rather than spinning up an unloaded inside wheel. The net effect on this car is a 5 Series that stays planted and predictable at a pace where the standard set-up would be pattering and vague.
About the Tarmac Rally coilover
XYZ built the Tarmac Rally line specifically to deal with uneven, broken pavement rather than the smoother, more consistent surface of a circuit. The valving is set up to absorb the shock of a hard, sudden hit – a pothole edge, a ridge, a patch repair – without transmitting that jolt straight into the body structure, so the chassis stays composed instead of getting knocked off line. Suppressing that body shock also does the job of keeping the tyre in contact with the road through the hit, which is where the traction actually comes from on loose or damaged tarmac. The result is a car that holds its line and its stability through the kind of surface that would upset a road-biased damper, and the settings themselves are carried over directly from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme rather than derived from a fast-road base spec.
Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E39 (1995-2003)
This kit is built for the BM22-chassis 5 Series across the full 1995-2003 production run, covering the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder saloon variants. It does not cover the Touring (wagon) body style – saloon-specific geometry only.
