The E28 5 Series runs a semi-trailing-arm rear axle, and under load that geometry gains camber and toe as the outer wheel compresses – the exact trait a drift car wants to feel through a committed slide rather than fight. XYZ Racing’s Pro Racing Drift Spec coilover is a φ52 welded-strut kit built for the 6-cylinder E28 (1980-1990), designed to hold that rear-end behaviour steady through a sustained angle instead of letting it become unpredictable.
This is a drift-specific application rather than a road-drop kit. Ride height comes down with a bump stroke calculated for the way an E28 loads its outer wheel mid-slide, giving the rear axle a stabilised base to work from as you carry the car through a high-speed turn.
What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series E28
Lower the E28 onto this kit and the first thing you notice is how much more settled the body stays as weight transfers into a slide. The reduced ride height and matched bump stroke keep the rear semi-trailing arms working in a tighter, more predictable range, so the angle you build going into a corner is the angle you keep coming out of it rather than one that keeps creeping. The three adjustment knobs let you separate compression and rebound response front to rear, which matters on the E28 because the nose and the rear axle don’t load at the same rate once you’re sideways – you can soften the front to help the car rotate and firm up the rear to stop it snapping past the angle you’ve chosen. For a straight-six E28, that extra rear control is what turns a car that can slide into a car you can hold sideways on demand.
About the Pro Racing Drift Spec coilover
XYZ Racing built the Pro Racing Drift Spec line specifically around competition drifting rather than adapting a general track coilover for the job. The strut body carries three external adjustment knobs, each metering damping oil through a deliberately narrow internal passage rather than a wide-open circuit – the trade-off is that on a rough surface you may hear a faint tick as oil moves through that restriction, which is a normal side effect of the valving rather than a fault. On smooth circuit tarmac, which is what this coilover is set up around, that passage stops being a concern at all. The narrow-oil-path design exists to stabilise the car’s body through the kind of sustained, high-speed direction change a drift run demands, holding the chassis at the angle the driver has chosen rather than letting weight transfer walk it further. Ride height and bump stroke are set up together so the E28 settles into that stabilised state as soon as it’s lowered.
Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E28 (1980-1990)
This kit is specced for the 6-cylinder E28 5 Series built between 1980 and 1990, chassis code BM02. It uses a φ52 (52mm) welding-type strut, meaning the front strut housing is welded into the shock tower rather than bolted in – factor that into fitting time and have it done by a shop set up for welded coilover conversions.

Check your E28’s strut mount is the welding type before ordering, then pick your damping and spring settings for the Pro Racing Drift Spec coilover below.
Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
