XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 6 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

Sealed-stage tarmac rally is unforgiving on a chassis this old: broken road surfaces, mid-corner camber changes and unmarked crests arrive at speed with no run-off to hide a mistake. The E28’s semi-trailing-arm rear end and long-nosed straight-six layout were never set up for that kind of abuse on the standard dampers, which is exactly the gap XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover kit for the BMW 5 Series E28 six-cylinder is built to close.

This is a rally-specific damper and spring package, not a fast-road coilover pressed into service. It is built around a welded φ52 strut sleeve rather than a threaded perch, because the E28’s original strut housing has no factory ride-height adjustment to hook into – XYZ welds the collar on to give a fixed, race-correct mounting point instead of relying on ageing OE tolerances.

What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series

On a stage, the difference shows up in how the car deals with the surface rather than in outright grip numbers. The valving is set to absorb a hard hit – a broken edge, a pothole disguised by shadow – without transmitting the full jolt through the body shell, which keeps the chassis settled for the next input instead of still recovering from the last one. That control keeps the tyre loaded through compressions and crests, which is where a 1980s trailing-arm rear axle traditionally starts to lose composure. Ride height is set via the welded 52mm perch, so once the car is corner-weighted for a stage it stays put, with no perch creep working loose over a long liaison.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ built this damper specifically around sealed-stage tarmac use rather than adapting a road kit. The valving is tuned to soak up sustained impact from uneven, unpredictable surfaces without the body pitching or the suspension bottoming out, and to keep the tyre’s contact patch loaded through the kind of compressions a closed road throws up that a track kerb never does. The stability that comes out of that tuning is the point of the exercise: a car that holds its line through a bump rather than getting knocked off it. XYZ’s own Tarmac Rally programme is where these settings came from, refined over actual stage running rather than a dyno bench.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series (1980-1990)

Built for the E28-generation BMW 5 Series, six-cylinder cars, 1980 to 1990, using the φ52 welded strut construction (XYZ reference BM02). Confirm your car sits within this generation and engine bracket before ordering, as the welded perch is specific to this chassis’s strut housing.
