XYZ Racing Super Sport Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 6 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

The BMW E28 5 Series carries its straight six a long way forward of the front axle, and on tired factory dampers that nose-heavy layout shows up as dive under braking and a semi-trailing-arm rear axle that starts to step out before the front end has finished loading. XYZ Racing’s Super Sport coilover kit for the 6-cylinder BM02 chassis is built around that trade-off, giving a 1980-1990 E28 a platform that settles rather than pitches through a B-road or the first few laps of a track session.

Super Sport sits in the middle of the XYZ Racing range: firm enough for weekend circuit use, compliant enough to still work as the car you drive home in afterwards. On this generation of 5 Series that means keeping the E28’s steering feel intact while cutting the wallow that original-spec springs and dampers develop after four decades of service.

What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series E28

36-way damping adjustment lets you set the front and rear independently, so the car can run softer for the motorway leg to a track day and firmer once you’re on circuit, without swapping parts. Ride height adjusts via the threaded body, bringing the car back to where BMW intended it – or lower, if you want to close the arch gap – without touching spring rate, so it doesn’t get harsher just because it sits lower. Because the kit is built around the 6-cylinder E28’s own spring perches, the nose stays planted under trail braking instead of diving onto the bump stops, and the rear axle loads more progressively through a corner, delaying the step-out that catches drivers out on original units. Day to day, the difference is less body movement over drainage covers and expansion joints – the same bumps that used to translate straight into the cabin through worn original dampers.

About the Super Sport coilover

XYZ Racing built the Super Sport line to remove the discomfort that comes with bumpy or broken road surfaces without giving up the control a stiffer setup provides. Each damper carries 36 stages of adjustment, running from a comfort-biased road setting through to a firm circuit tune, and ride height is independently adjustable so stance and spring preload aren’t locked together. The kit follows XYZ Racing’s mono-tube construction, which holds oil temperature more stable under repeated hard use than a twin-tube design and cuts the fade that turns up over a full track session. It’s pitched as a dual-purpose setup – specced for a weekend at a circuit but civil enough to use daily – which suits an E28 owner running one car rather than a garage queen and a trailer.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E28 (1980-1990)

This kit is listed against XYZ Racing’s BM02 fitment code, covering the 6-cylinder E28 5 Series built between 1980 and 1990. It’s specced for the φ52 strut tube diameter with a welding-type lower mount, so confirm your car’s original strut matches before ordering rather than assuming parity with 4-cylinder E28 fitments, which use a different strut tube size.
