XYZ Racing Circuit Master Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E28 6 CYL φ52 welding 1980-1990

The XYZ Racing Circuit Master coilover kit for the BMW 5 Series E28 straight-six brings fully adjustable damping to a chassis that pre-dates factory coilover mounting altogether. This φ52 welding-fit kit is built for owners who’ve committed to the E28’s semi-trailing-arm rear end and the M30 six’s nose-forward weight bias, and who want that combination sorted for sustained circuit lap-time work rather than a single trackday outing.

Because the E28 shell was never designed around a bolt-in strut cartridge, the 52mm strut tubes are welded into the factory housings rather than clamped in, giving the kit a mounting point as rigid as the original unibody. That’s the starting point for everything the Circuit Master range is built to do once the car is on a circuit.

What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series E28

On an E28, spring and damping choices matter more than on most cars its age, because the semi-trailing-arm rear geometry shifts camber and toe as the suspension compresses – get that wrong and the back end goes nervous under trail-braking into a fast corner. The Circuit Master’s damping adjustment lets you firm up compression enough to control that camber change through a full session, without turning the ride into a pogo stick over kerbs. Dropping the ride height also lowers the M30 six’s centre of gravity, cutting the body roll that the factory 1980s geometry was never set up to resist. The welded 52mm strut mounting keeps that adjustment range consistent as the housings age, instead of working loose the way a pressed-in perch can on a chassis this old.

About the Circuit Master coilover

The Circuit Master sits at the top of XYZ Racing’s range and is developed alongside the racing teams the brand supports on circuits worldwide, rather than adapted from a road-going base. Three external adjustment knobs give access to a combined 9,720 damping settings, enough range to move from a soft setup for a bumpy circuit to a stiff one for a smooth, high-grip layout without swapping parts. That resolution comes from a small-oil-hole valving design inside each damper; the trade-off is that the fluid can produce a faint noise working through the smaller passage over kerbs and track bumps. That’s a normal characteristic of this valving rather than a fault, and it’s specifically built so it doesn’t blunt damping control once the car is running on a circuit surface.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E28 (1980-1990)

This kit is specified for the BMW 5 Series E28 6-cylinder, chassis code BM02, built between 1980 and 1990. It’s the φ52 welding version, so the 52mm strut tubes are welded into the factory strut housings rather than bolted in – confirm your car is still running its standard steel strut housing before ordering.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
