The E28-generation Bmw 5 Series was engineered around a MacPherson-strut front end and semi-trailing-arm rear axle that were never asked to cope with a rutted forest stage or a snow-packed B-road. On loose surfaces that rear axle needs far more vertical travel than a standard road strut allows, or the wheel simply skips across the surface instead of loading it. XYZ Racing’s Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover is built specifically around that shortfall.
This kit is aimed at the 6 CYL, φ52-welding E28 running loose-surface events – rally, rallycross, or serious winter driving – where keeping the tyre in contact with the ground matters more than outright stiffness. It isn’t the right coilover for a 5 Series that only ever sees smooth tarmac; it’s built for the opposite problem.
What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 Bmw 5 Series E28
Extended front and rear stroke gives the E28’s suspension somewhere to go when a wheel drops into a rut or a compression, rather than bottoming out and unloading the opposite corner. The larger internal reservoir of suspension oil and nitrogen gas is the other half of that equation: a longer stage or a long, cold winter drive generates sustained heat in the damper, and the bigger fluid volume keeps that heat from spiking oil temperature to the point where damping falls away. On an E28’s relatively soft factory chassis, that combination keeps the rear axle predictable through successive compressions instead of getting progressively vaguer as a run goes on. The three external adjustment knobs let you retune compression and rebound between a gravel stage and a snow-covered event without swapping hardware, which matters on a car this age where you’re working around whatever surface turns up on the day.
About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover
This is a damper built for rally and rallycross use rather than circuit driving, and every part of its design reflects that. Both the front and rear units run longer travel than XYZ Racing’s tarmac-focused coilovers, giving the axle a genuinely bigger buffer before it runs out of stroke on rough ground. The internal oil and nitrogen gas capacity is increased over a standard road or track unit specifically to manage heat build-up on long, punishing stages, where an under-specced damper would otherwise cook its own oil and lose consistency. The three-way adjustment knobs use a small-passage oil-hole design; driving over sharp bumps can produce a faint noise as oil moves through that passage, which is expected behaviour on this type of valving rather than a fault. It’s a construction aimed squarely at drivers who need their E28 to survive repeated hard hits on broken surfaces, not just look the part in a car park.
Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E28 (1980-1990)
Built for the 6-cylinder Bmw 5 Series E28, chassis code BM02, covering the 1980 to 1990 production run. This is the φ52-welding strut specification, so confirm your car’s front strut mounting matches that welded 52mm design before ordering.

Built for drivers who take their E28 off smooth tarmac and need the suspension to keep up – configure yours below.
Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
