The E28 5 Series was engineered around motorway composure, not repeated hits over rutted forest tracks – a MacPherson strut front and semi-trailing arm rear that were never asked to soak up the kind of chassis loading a gravel stage delivers every few seconds. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover for the six-cylinder E28 replaces that geometry with an inverted-tube damper and a long-stroke, long-spring layout built to keep the axle in contact with the ground when the surface disappears from under it.
This is the φ52 weld-in version, so the strut body is sized and finished for a fabricated mount rather than a bolt-in top hat – the setup rally preparers use when they’re building a car specifically for loose-surface events. It’s built around one job: keeping this BM02-chassis 5 Series composed on gravel and rallycross stages, not splitting the difference with road manners.
What this coilover does for your 1980-1990 BMW 5 Series E28
On loose surfaces, wheel control matters more than outright stiffness, and that’s where the inverted-tube construction and extended stroke earn their keep. The long-travel damper lets the E28’s front struts and rear arms move through a wider range before you feel a harsh top-out or bottom-out, so more of each compression is absorbed by the shock rather than transmitted into the chassis and your hands. Because the spring and damper are matched for sandstone, snow and silt rather than one road surface, the car settles faster after a compression instead of packing down and skating into the next rut. On a straight-six E28, that faster settling matters even more, since the extra nose weight is what tips a soft-sprung car into understeer the moment the surface breaks up mid-corner. The result on the stage is a car that holds its line under repeated hits rather than one that gets progressively looser as the section runs on.
About the Gravel Rally coilover
XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross use, where road surface is the most punishing variable in any motorsport discipline – the shock absorber, more than any other single component, decides whether the car stays planted or gets thrown off line. The inverted-tube design was chosen to cope with the range of surfaces a stage throws up, from loose sandstone to snow-packed sections to fine silt, each of which loads a damper differently. A long stroke paired with a long spring gives the chassis room to absorb vibration and to shrug off the aggressive compressions that come with high-speed bouncing over broken ground, while managing the extreme G-force generated mid-corner. Spring rates aren’t generic either: XYZ Racing’s rally team set and tested them through actual competition rather than on a bench, so the rates reflect what a car needs when the road surface disappears under it.

Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
