XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Toyota STARLET EP7/8/9 1984-1999

A kerb weight that barely troubles a tonne is the Starlet EP7/8/9’s whole personality, and it cuts both ways: the car darts into a corner on a whiff of steering, then squirms on its soft factory springs the moment you load it up. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover for the Toyota Starlet EP7/8/9 exists to settle that body movement without turning a featherweight hatch into something punishing on a broken B-road.

Top Sport sits where most owners actually drive – occasional track days backed up by a car that still copes with the weekly commute. It is the fast-road-to-circuit pick for the EP82 GT Turbo and EP91 Glanza V crowd as much as the lighter naturally aspirated cars, and it leaves you room to firm things off for a session, then wind them back for Monday morning.

What this coilover does for your 1984-1999 Toyota Starlet EP7/8/9

Run a stiffer spring and the nose stops diving under braking into a hairpin, which on a short-wheelbase car like the Starlet is the difference between a tidy entry and a front tyre that washes wide. XYZ builds the Top Sport around roughly 30 to 50 per cent more damping, or a 2kg/mm higher spring rate, than a street setup – so the extra control comes from real valving and rate, not just a dropped ride height. That damping keeps the contact patch planted over mid-corner ripples and kerbing, feeding traction back to a light front axle that spins up easily under boost. Lower the car to cut roll and drop the centre of gravity, and the EP chassis stops leaning on its outside front and starts using all four tyres.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport is XYZ Racing’s road-and-track coilover, and its baseline settings come straight from the company’s own Top Sport racing experience. The headline is a deliberate step up from a street spec – in the region of 30 to 50 per cent more damping force, or around 2kg/mm more spring rate – chosen so the kit absorbs the impact of uneven pavement and the sharp jolt of a big bump rather than transmitting it into the shell. By suppressing that shock to the body, the damper holds the tyre against the road and builds traction, and the payoff is the stable, predictable handling that lets you commit to the car. Ride height is adjustable, so stance and corner balance are yours to set. It is aimed squarely at track-day use and aggressive driving while staying liveable on the street.
