XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Toyota STARLET EP7/8/9 1984-1999

A Starlet weighs almost nothing, and that is the whole engineering problem. With so little mass pressing the tyres into the tarmac, a light front-wheel-drive hatch like the EP7/8/9 punishes any damper that cannot react quickly enough to keep the contact patch planted. The XYZ Racing Racing Spec coilover for the Toyota Starlet EP7/8/9 is built for that job: serious track and time-attack use, where body control matters more than ride comfort.

This is the hard end of the XYZ Racing range. Racing Spec is the series the company developed through direct competition rather than a catalogue spreadsheet, and it is aimed at owners running these cars in anger – sprint, drag and circuit work – not the fast-road crowd. On a chassis this minimalist, the right coilover is the single biggest handling change you can make.

What this coilover does for your 1984-1999 Toyota Starlet EP7/8/9

Drop the ride height and you lower the EP’s centre of gravity, cutting the body roll a tall, narrow hatch generates through quick direction changes. Firmer, motorsport-rate damping stops the front struts from washing out under trail-braking, so the nose stays keyed into the apex instead of pushing wide. Because the platform is so light, the gains are immediate – you feel the car stop floating over kerbs and start changing direction on command. Corner-weight the kit on a set of scales and you can balance a famously lively little chassis to your driving style and the circuit you run. The result is a Starlet that puts its power down out of slow corners instead of scrabbling for grip.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec is XYZ Racing’s circuit weapon, developed for cars that spend their weekends on track rather than commuting. The damper valving was not arrived at on a test rig alone – the settings come from XYZ Racing’s own participation in top-tier touring car competition, including WTCC, and that data feeds directly into how these units are built. For most Starlet owners the standard Racing Spec specification is more than enough. But the series goes further than an off-the-shelf coilover: for heavily modified cars – the sort running the aggressive upgrades you would find on a works racing entry or an A-class competition build – XYZ Racing will produce bespoke shock absorbers. You supply the detail on your modifications and the circuit you intend to run, and they valve a set to suit that specific car. It is a level of bespoke service almost unheard of at this price.
