XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Toyota STARLET EP7/8/9 1984-1999

On a loose gravel stage the featherweight Toyota Starlet’s greatest asset, its lack of mass, is exactly what makes damping the deciding factor. The EP7/8/9 platform pitches and rotates eagerly the moment you lift, and the short wheelbase means every rut and crest tries to unsettle it. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built for that environment: high-speed bouncy surfaces, big compression hits, and the lateral loads of a sub-tonne car being thrown into a low-grip corner.

This is the gravel-specific kit, not a tarmac coilover pressed into rally duty. Long-stroke dampers and long springs work to keep the wheels tracking the ground over sandstone, snow and silt, while the spring rates were settled by a working rally team rather than a spreadsheet.

What this coilover does for your 1984-1999 Toyota Starlet EP7/8/9

Fit it and the first thing you notice on a rough stage is composure where the standard car would skip and deflect. The long stroke lets the suspension stay loaded over washboard and through compressions instead of running out of travel and bottoming on landings. That extra working travel keeps the front tyres biting for turn-in and, just as important on a nose-led Starlet, keeps the inside rear planted enough to drive cleanly off slow hairpins. The inverted tube layout puts the larger, stiffer tube up top where side loads and stone strikes are worst, so the damper resists the flex and damage a conventional strut would weather less well. The net result is a car you can commit to a bouncy section rather than nurse through it.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross, where the road surface is the harshest in motorsport and the shock absorber does more to shape the result than almost any other component. The inverted tube construction is the heart of it, chosen to cope with the constantly shifting grip of sandstone, snow and silt without losing control of the wheel. Long-stroke damping paired with long springs delivers the travel needed to absorb severe chassis vibration, to attack high-speed undulating roads without the car deflecting off line, and to carry the heavy lateral G-loads generated when a slippery surface still has to be cornered hard. Every spring rate in the range has been validated on stage by a rally team, so the baseline settings reflect what works in competition rather than a generic catalogue figure.

The Gravel Rally coilover is the gravel-stage answer for the EP7/8/9 Starlet – pick your spec and build yours below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
