XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow Coilovers — Toyota STARLET EP7/8/9 1984-1999

The EP-series Starlet’s lightweight, front-wheel-drive platform gave it a natural affinity with loose-surface competition – the reason GT Turbo variants appeared in club and national rally programmes from the mid-1980s onward, and why Glanza V-era EP90s were still being campaigned deep into the 1990s. On gravel and snow, though, a road-oriented coilover reaches its limits quickly: the travel simply isn’t there to absorb surface changes, and heat from sustained high-frequency cycling begins to degrade damper behaviour well before a stage ends.

The XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover for the Toyota Starlet EP7/8/9 addresses both problems directly. Extended travel at both ends provides the buffer distance the chassis needs over loose, broken, or rutted terrain, while increased oil volume and nitrogen gas charge keep the dampers functioning consistently across the full duration of a timed stage.

What this coilover does for your 1984-1999 Toyota STARLET EP7/8/9

Managing load transfer at the front axle is the core challenge on any FWD rally car, and the Starlet’s compact layout concentrates that demand in a small package. Additional suspension travel front and rear lets the wheels follow surface changes that would otherwise cause the car to skip or lose drive. The extended oil capacity and nitrogen gas volume reduce the risk of damper fade during prolonged use – consistent behaviour mid-stage matters more than any outright adjustment position. Three adjustment knobs give direct control over damping response, so the car’s character can be shifted between stages as conditions or surface type change. Height adjustment allows compliance to be tuned for loose terrain without raising the centre of gravity unnecessarily.

About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover

Built for rally racing and rallycross, the XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow unit prioritises suspension travel over low-stance geometry. Front and rear dampers feature longer travel than a circuit or road coilover, providing the compliance needed when the surface transitions from packed gravel to mud, ruts, or snow. The increased volume of suspension oil and nitrogen gas allows the damper to sustain large-amplitude cycling without the oil temperature rising to a level where it affects damper behaviour – a real concern on any extended special stage. Three adjustment knobs, using a small oil-hole passage design, give precise control over damping characteristics; the restricted-orifice architecture produces a faint noise over very large suspension deflections, which is inherent to how the adjustment mechanism works and not a fault. Every aspect of the specification reflects a brief built around rough terrain.

Fitment for the Toyota STARLET EP7/8/9 (1984-1999)

This kit covers the full EP-series Toyota Starlet range under chassis code TO52, spanning three platform generations: EP70 (1984-1989), EP80 (1989-1996), and EP90 (1996-1999). Variants across this range include the GT Turbo models of the EP70 and EP80 series and the Glanza V of the EP90. Confirm your specific build-year and engine variant against the fitment selector before ordering.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. With longer travel for both front and rear, it increases bigger buffer distance to keep the car stable. The most advantages of this product is to extend the amount of suspension oil and nitrogen gas which can increase the stability of the shocks and prevent the shock oil temperature too high from being exhausted after long-term use.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
