XYZ Racing Street Advanced Coilovers — Hyundai COUPE 1997-2001

The first-generation Hyundai Coupe RD arrived with sharp Italdesign styling wrapped around a chassis that was always softer than the bodywork suggested. Nearly three decades on, the surviving cars are running on suspension components that gave up the ghost a long time ago, and that is precisely where the Street Advanced earns its keep.

This is a fully height- and damping-adjustable coilover kit for the 1997-2001 Coupe, built around 720 damping settings and a single combined bump/rebound knob per corner. It is aimed at the owner who drives the car daily but wants the option of taking it to a trackday at Castle Combe or Cadwell without swapping setups.

What this coilover kit does for your 1997-2001 Hyundai Coupe

Drop the Coupe onto a fresh set of these and the first thing you notice is the body movement disappearing. The original RD chassis leans heavily on its outside front wheel mid-corner, which is the source of the understeer owners complain about – tighter damping control and a lower centre of gravity claw a lot of that back without making the car feel brittle on broken B-roads. The 720 damping positions give you genuine usable range: wind it soft for a Tesco run, firm it up for a Sunday blast.

Ride height adjustment is independent of spring preload, so you can sit the car properly over the arches without binding the spring or running out of suspension travel. For a car that often gets used as a budget weekend toy, that flexibility matters more than chasing a single fixed setup.

About the Street Advanced coilover

The Street Advanced is XYZ Racing’s most established platform and the kit the company has refined longest. It is built specifically for road use with trackday capability – not the other way around – which dictates the spring rate selection and the damper valving. Construction is monotube with a piston that has been developed over years of testing alongside XYZ’s professional race programmes.

The single 720-way adjuster controls bump and rebound together, which is the right call for a street-led kit: it keeps setup simple and stops owners getting lost in compression-versus-rebound theory when all they want is a more composed car. Height adjustment is via the lower mount, preserving full damper stroke regardless of ride height. The kit is sold with the spring rates XYZ has settled on as the right compromise for the Coupe’s kerb weight and weight distribution.

Fitment for the Hyundai Coupe (1997-2001)

This kit fits the first-generation Hyundai Coupe, chassis code HY03, covering model years 1997 to 2001. It is a direct bolt-on replacement for the OEM strut and shock arrangement at all four corners. Confirm your build year falls inside the 1997-2001 window before ordering – the second-generation GK Coupe takes a different part number.
