XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Hyundai COUPE 1997-2001

The first-generation Hyundai Coupe (RD) is an unlikely rally weapon on paper – a front-drive 2.0-litre coupe built on the Lantra floorpan – but its short wheelbase, light kerb weight and willing Beta-derived 16v make it a natural for stage work once the suspension stops fighting the surface. Stock dampers run out of stroke the moment a Welsh forest road throws a compression at them, and the standard spring rates pack down after the first big landing.

These XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilovers are built for exactly that environment. Long stroke, long springs, inverted strut tubes – a damper designed to keep the contact patch loaded when the Coupe is being driven over surfaces it was never sold to see.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2001 Hyundai Coupe

The inverted-tube architecture matters most on the Coupe’s MacPherson front end, where loose surfaces hammer the strut shaft. Inverting the tube puts the larger-diameter body at the top of the leg, which resists side load far better than a conventional damper and dramatically improves stiction under fast direction changes. Long-stroke valving lets the wheel travel through a stage compression without topping or bottoming, so the front tyres keep biting through ruts and crests instead of skating across them. Spring rates are matched to the Coupe’s relatively light front-axle load, so the car can attack a high-speed bouncy section without the nose pitching into the bump stops. Body control is the real prize: the Coupe stops washing wide under throttle on gravel and starts steering on the throttle the way a proper stage car should.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s dedicated loose-surface platform – aimed squarely at rallying and rallycross rather than any tarmac use. Construction is inverted-tube, which is the format every serious gravel programme runs because it survives the side-loading that destroys conventional monotubes on stage. Stroke and spring length are both extended beyond the road-going XYZ ranges, giving the damper room to soak up landings from jumps and absorb the high-frequency chatter of sandstone, packed snow and silt without losing its shim stack. Spring rates across the range have been signed off on actual stage testing by rally teams running XYZ dampers, not interpolated from a road tune. The result is a coilover engineered to bear extreme G-force through cornering while still keeping the chassis settled on the rough stuff between corners.

Fitment for the Hyundai Coupe (1997-2001)

This kit fits the first-generation Hyundai Coupe, chassis code HY03, model years 1997 to 2001. The fitment covers the original RD-series Coupe up to the facelift transition, including the 2.0-litre 16v cars most often built for stage and rallycross use.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
