XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Hyundai COUPE 1997-2001

The first-generation Hyundai Coupe (RD) was a styling exercise wrapped around a humble Lantra floorpan, and its softly-sprung MacPherson front end has always been the limiting factor when owners push past trackday novice pace. The Racing Spec coilover exists to replace that compromise wholesale – this is the kit you fit when the Coupe is no longer a road car that visits circuits, but a circuit car that occasionally drives home.

Built from data XYZ Racing collected campaigning cars in WTCC and similar tin-top series, the Racing Spec sits at the sharp end of the catalogue. It is not the kit for a tidy weekend B-road Coupe – it is the kit for an RD running semi-slicks, a stripped interior, and a logbook full of timing sheets.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2001 Hyundai Coupe

On a circuit, the stock Coupe rolls into corner entry, washes wide on turn-in, and runs out of damping authority by the third or fourth flying lap as the OE struts heat-soak. The Racing Spec damper resolves all three problems in one fitment. Spring rates and valving are matched to track loads rather than UK B-road compliance, so the front end bites cleanly into apexes and the rear stays planted under trail-braking. Ride height adjustment lets you set corner weights properly – critical on a chassis as nose-heavy as the RD – and the racing-derived damping curve holds its tune as oil temperatures climb deep into a session. Combined with sticky rubber, the change in lap-time consistency is the headline benefit: the Coupe stops dropping pace on lap five.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec is XYZ Racing’s circuit-development damper, with valving and spring rates derived directly from the company’s involvement in WTCC and similar saloon-car racing. The construction is built around sustained thermal loads rather than occasional spirited driving – the priority is repeatable damping after repeat heat cycles, not plush cruising. Because the rates are specified for competition use, the kit assumes the rest of the car has moved in the same direction: appropriate tyres, brake pads, and chassis prep. XYZ also offer fully bespoke shock specification on this line – if your RD runs significant aero, weight reduction, or other meaningful chassis modifications, you can supply the build sheet and target circuit, and the dampers will be valved specifically for that combination rather than to a generic curve.

Fitment for the Hyundai Coupe (1997-2001)

This kit fits the first-generation Hyundai Coupe, chassis code HY03, covering model years 1997 to 2001 inclusive. It is a four-corner kit matched to the RD’s MacPherson front and rear suspension layout. Confirm your year and chassis against the V5 before ordering, particularly if your car sits on the borderline of the 2001-2002 facelift.
