XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Ford TIERRA 1998-2002

The Ford Tierra is the Mazda 323-derived saloon that became a regional rally weapon in the late nineties, and the FO20 chassis rewards a damper that can carry corner speed across broken sealed surfaces without unloading the inside front. That is exactly the brief the XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover was built around.

This is a stage-spec damper aimed at sealed-surface rallying – closed-road tarmac events, hillclimbs, and the kind of fast-road use where mid-corner ruts and patched asphalt would unsettle a road-biased coilover. The shock body and valving settings come directly from XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally programme, which is the bit that matters: this is not a re-badged track damper with longer travel.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2002 Ford Tierra

A Tierra on standard suspension runs out of damper authority quickly once the surface stops being smooth – the body floats over compression strikes and the front tyres skip across mid-corner bumps that should have been absorbed. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover changes the basic conversation between road and tyre. The valving is tuned to soak the initial impact of a big hit, then control the rebound so the shock body settles instead of pogo-ing back into the next compression. On a 1998-2002 Tierra that means the front end stays planted through fast direction changes, the rear axle stops stepping out over patched tarmac, and the contact patch keeps working when the road surface turns punishing. The car feels calmer at speed and noticeably more willing to commit to a line you can see is broken halfway through.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is XYZ Racing’s sealed-surface stage damper, distinct from their gravel, drift and circuit lines. The brief is impact absorption first, body control second – the unit needs to take the jolt of a big compression strike, suppress the shock body’s response, and put the load back through the tyre rather than through the chassis. Every setting in the kit, from spring rate selection through damper valving to bump and rebound characteristics, comes from XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally race experience rather than a desk-engineered ideal. The result is a damper that is comfortable being abused over surfaces a circuit coilover would protest, while keeping the car composed enough to be hustled hard between corners.
