XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Ford TIERRA 1998-2002

The Ford Tierra is an oddball on UK stages – a Mazda 323F-derived saloon that found a second life in Asia-Pacific rally circles, and one that’s now a rarity here when an owner wants a proper gravel-spec damper. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built for exactly that brief: long-stroke, inverted-tube suspension that lets the Tierra’s relatively light front-drive chassis ride out broken surfaces without packing down on the bump stops.

If you’re prepping a Tierra for forest stages, gravel rallycross, or even mixed-surface club events, this is the spec that addresses what the platform actually needs – travel, compliance over big inputs, and spring rates that have been validated by rally teams rather than guessed from a road-car catalogue.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2002 Ford Tierra

The Tierra’s MacPherson-strut front and twin-trapezoidal rear were never designed for the kind of vertical loading a gravel stage throws at a car. The inverted-tube layout of this damper puts the heavier, stronger components at the top of the strut, which keeps the unsprung mass lower at the wheel and protects the damper rod from stone strikes – a real concern on Welsh forestry roads. Long stroke means the suspension keeps working when the surface drops away beneath a wheel, rather than going light and skipping the car off-line. Long springs hold rate progression through that whole stroke, so the car settles into a corner under braking instead of pogoing on turn-in. On a sub-1200kg saloon like the Tierra, that translates directly into a driver who can carry confident commitment over yumps and surface changes.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ’s purpose-engineered rally damper, and it’s the most aggressive use-case in the catalogue – rallycross and gravel stages are, by XYZ’s own description, the harshest road conditions in motorsport. The inverted-tube construction is the headline change versus a circuit damper: it’s specified to cope with sandstone, snow, and silt without contamination compromising the seal or the rod. Travel is the next big difference – long stroke and long springs let the suspension absorb the high-speed bouncy inputs of a stage road and bear the G-force loads of cornering on a low-grip surface where the car is constantly transitioning between throttle and brake. Every spring rate offered has been validated on car by XYZ’s own rally teams, which matters when there’s no established UK setup baseline for a Tierra to crib from.

Fitment for the Ford Tierra (1998-2002)

This kit is fitted for the FO20-platform Ford Tierra across the 1998 to 2002 model years. Confirm your chassis code matches before configuring spring rate and ride height – the Tierra shared underpinnings with the BJ-generation Mazda Familia / 323, but the rally-spec damper is supplied here specifically against the Ford fitment.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
