XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Ford TIERRA 1998-2002

The Ford Tierra is one of those quietly capable saloons that rewards the owner who actually wants to drive it – the kind of car you find on a Taiwanese mountain road or a UK trackday paddock with a roll cage and stickered arches. Out of the box it sits soft and high, with the body roll and front-end float that any late-90s Mazda-derived compact saloon exhibits when you start leaning on it. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is built specifically for the Tierra owner who has decided that the standard struts are the thing holding the car back.

This is the kit XYZ themselves recommend for occasional trackday use paired with regular street driving. Spring rates and damping land roughly 30-50% firmer than the original setup – enough to flatten the chassis through fast direction changes without making the car unliveable on the commute home.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2002 Ford Tierra

Fitted to the Tierra, the Top Sport pulls the body height down into a more planted stance and removes the lift-off pitch that the standard suspension delivers under hard braking into a tight corner. The stiffer spring rate (roughly 2kg/mm above street settings) keeps the chassis flat enough that you can actually feel the front tyres loading up rather than feeling the body roll first and the grip second. Damping is adjustable so you can soften the kit off for a long motorway run and then firm it back up before a track session. Bump absorption over broken UK B-road surfaces is preserved by the way the damper bleeds high-frequency input – the car still goes around potholes rather than into them, which matters on a daily-driven saloon. Ride height adjustment lets you set rake and corner-weight the car if you are running it competitively.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s range as the trackday-and-street option, distinct from the harder full-race Super Sport or Circuit Master kits. The damper and spring package is derived directly from XYZ’s own Top Sport racing programme – the same engineering logic that goes onto cars running in their works series. Damping force is set 30-50% above a street-only coilover, and spring rates are stepped up by around 2kg/mm, which is the increment XYZ have settled on as the point where you gain real body control without losing daily compliance. The construction is designed to absorb large single impacts – kerbs, expansion joints, the worst of a track exit – while suppressing the secondary body movement that costs tyre contact. The damper resists the jolt, the chassis stays settled, and the tyre stays loaded. That is the engineering brief XYZ have written for this kit, and it is the right one for a Tierra that needs to do both jobs.
