XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Subaru IMPREZA STI 4WD 1992-2000

The GC8-generation Impreza STI’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system was built to put power down over loose, broken surfaces, and that only works if the suspension keeps the wheels in contact with the ground through repeated compressions rather than skating over the top of them. A gravel stage throws jumps, ruts and washboard sections at the chassis in quick succession, and standard-length dampers run out of travel fast when the car is asked to soak that up at speed.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built specifically for that environment. It replaces the factory suspension with a long-stroke, long-spring setup designed to absorb chassis movement on sandstone, snow and silt rather than smooth asphalt, giving the Impreza STI 4WD the wheel travel a genuine rally stage demands.

What this coilover does for your 1992-2000 Subaru Impreza STI 4WD

Fit this coilover to a 1992-2000 Impreza STI 4WD and the biggest change is how much longer the suspension keeps working before it runs out of travel. The extended stroke lets the chassis absorb bigger compressions – landing from a jump, hitting a hidden rut – without the dampers bottoming out and unsettling the car mid-corner. Spring rates are set specifically for rally use, so the AWD system can keep transferring power through rough sections instead of the suspension skipping across the surface. Inverted tube construction is arranged to cope with the abrasive grit, mud and debris that a gravel stage throws at open damper bodies, which matters over a full event rather than a single clean run. The result on a GC8 STI is a car that stays planted and predictable when the road surface stops being predictable itself.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s damper for rally and rallycross use, built around the idea that loose-surface competition puts more demand on a shock absorber than almost any other form of motorsport. XYZ Racing uses an inverted tube layout on this unit specifically to deal with the range of surfaces a rally car actually meets – sandstone, snow, silt – rather than tuning for one condition. Stroke length and spring length are both extended over a standard road coilover, giving the damper enough travel to soak up chassis vibration from washboard sections and absorb the G-forces generated when the car is thrown into a turn at speed on a surface with limited grip. Every spring rate offered in the Gravel Rally range has been set through actual rally racing testing rather than derived from road-going data, which is why the settings suit stage work rather than circuit lapping. It is not a dual-purpose product – this is a damper built around one job, keeping a rally car’s wheels in contact with a moving, unpredictable surface.

Fitment for the Subaru Impreza STI 4WD (1992-2000)

This kit is built for the Subaru Impreza STI 4WD, chassis code SU04-1, covering the 1992 to 2000 model years – the GC8-generation cars. It is specific to the 4WD STI drivetrain layout across that production span, so confirm your Impreza falls within this year range and drivetrain configuration before ordering.

Available in the spring rates XYZ Racing has tested through rally competition, this Gravel Rally coilover is built to keep a GC8 STI working through a full stage rather than one clean pass – configure yours below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
