XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow Coilovers — Subaru FORESTER SF 4WD 1997-2003

The Forester SF’s raised ride height and symmetrical all-wheel-drive layout have long made it a favourite donor car for rally and rallycross builds, but the factory dampers run out of travel fast once the surface turns to gravel, mud or snow. Compression bottoms out over ruts, rebound can’t keep the tyre in contact through a washboard section, and the whole car starts to skip rather than track.

This Pro Racing Gravel/Snow set is built around that reality. Longer-stroke dampers front and rear give the SF’s suspension more room to work before it tops or bottoms out, which is what keeps the car settled when a rutted forest stage, a snow-packed hairpin or a rough farm track throws it off line.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2003 Subaru FORESTER SF 4WD

Extra piston travel front and rear means the boxer-engined SF can absorb a bigger hit – a compression, a jump landing, a frost heave – without the damper running out of shaft and transmitting the impact straight into the chassis. A larger internal reservoir of suspension oil and nitrogen gas spreads that work over a bigger volume, so the oil temperature stays lower across a long stage or a full day of snow driving rather than spiking and thinning out. The three external adjustment knobs let you set compression and rebound separately front to rear, useful on a car that’s carrying AWD hardware low in the chassis and needs the front and rear axles working together rather than fighting each other on loose surfaces.

About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover

This type is built specifically for rally and rallycross use rather than tarmac circuit driving, and it shows in the engineering choices. The longer front and rear stroke exists to create a bigger buffer zone between the suspension and its limits, so the car stays composed when the surface underneath it is unpredictable. Where this design earns its keep is thermal management: the increased volume of suspension oil and nitrogen gas gives the damper more capacity to absorb heat before oil temperature climbs high enough to affect consistency late in a stage. The valving runs through a small-orifice passage at each of the three adjustment knobs, and on repeated big hits that can produce a faint noise from the oil moving through the restriction – that’s the design working as intended, not a fault to chase. It’s a setup engineered around abuse on loose, broken and low-grip surfaces rather than smooth asphalt.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. With longer travel for both front and rear, it increases bigger buffer distance to keep the car stable. The most advantages of this product is to extend the amount of suspension oil and nitrogen gas which can increase the stability of the shocks and prevent the shock oil temperature too high from being exhausted after long-term use.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
