XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Subaru FORESTER SF 4WD 1997-2003

The Forester SF’s raised ride height and boxer-engined 4WD platform were built for loose surfaces long before this generation ever saw a stage, but the factory dampers give up in the first big compression event over broken gravel. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover replaces that give-up with an inverted-tube damper built specifically for the abuse of a gravel stage: sandstone ruts, ice-rutted snow and silt washouts that would blow through a road-biased shock in a handful of runs.

For a car that’s genuinely stage-bound rather than just fast-road, that means a damper that survives repeat runs without fade, not one that trades away travel for a quick lap of tarmac.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2003 Subaru Forester SF

On the SF, ride height and wheel travel are the whole game – this raised, softly-sprung 4WD wagon rolls and pitches long before a lowered road car would even register a mid-corner bump. The Gravel Rally’s long-stroke, long-spring layout keeps the tyre loaded and in contact through the kind of chassis vibration a stage throws at a raised platform, rather than letting the suspension top out cresting a brow or bottom out landing off a compression. Inverted-tube construction keeps the damper working through the extreme G-force loading a Forester generates turning hard on loose surfaces, where body movement is larger than on a lowered tarmac car. The result is a Forester that holds its line braking into a gravel hairpin and stays settled exiting onto a rutted straight, instead of wallowing through travel the factory dampers were never built to control at this pace.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ’s Gravel Rally line is built for one job: surviving a rally or rally cross stage, the roughest road condition in competitive motorsport. It uses an inverted-tube damper design specifically to cope with surface conditions changing stage to stage – sandstone one event, packed snow the next, loose silt after that – without needing a different unit for each. Long stroke and long spring travel absorb the chassis vibration a gravel car generates hammering over broken, bouncy ground at speed, and keep control through the extreme cornering loads a 4WD car pushes into its suspension mid-turn. Every spring rate offered in the Gravel Rally range has been set and proven by an actual rally racing team rather than calculated on a bench, so the rates on offer reflect what a car actually needs to stay planted on loose surfaces at pace.

Spring rates and travel are set for the surface, not one setup for every stage – pick your spec for the Forester SF below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
