XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Porsche 996 CARRERA-4/4S 1998-2001

The 996 Carrera-4 and 4S carry roughly 60 percent of their kerb weight over the rear axle, and the all-wheel drive system adds a further complication to suspension tuning that a standard coilover isn’t calibrated to manage. On tarmac stages – where the surface looks smooth from the roadbook but delivers sudden crest compressions and aggressive mid-corner bumps – that rear-engine bias needs to be worked with, not just suppressed. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built from experience accumulated at exactly that coalface.

With its Turbo-sourced wide-body shell and the additional mass of the front axle differential, the 996 C4S sits well in historic-class tarmac competition. These coilovers address the fundamentals: composure over sharp-edged road breaks, and consistent contact between all four tyres and the tarmac at the moments that decide stage times.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2001 Porsche 996 CARRERA-4/4S

The XYZ Tarmac Rally unit is built to absorb the sudden compression that catches you mid-apex on a closed stage – the kind that loads the 996’s MacPherson front struts sharply while the rear multi-link is still settling from the previous crest. Effective shock suppression means the 996’s characteristic weight transfer stays predictable across consecutive surface changes, rather than oscillating after impact. For the AWD variants, better tyre contact translates into the front differential engaging more cleanly on slow-hairpin exits. Stability under hard braking – already a factor when the rear-engine layout pitches the nose at an oblique angle into a tight stage junction – becomes measurably more consistent.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally specification exists to handle what road and circuit suspension will not: the irregular surface of a sealed stage where smooth-looking tarmac can crack, ridge, or drop away without warning. The engineering brief centres on impact absorption – specifically, soaking up large, sudden compressions without transferring that energy into the body as a spike that disrupts driver inputs. The geometry and valving in this kit are drawn directly from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme; these are not road settings adapted for competition use, but settings derived from competition use and worked back to the hardware. Body roll suppression and consistent tyre traction are the primary outcomes, and the construction is built around achieving both on real stage surfaces.

Fitment for the Porsche 996 CARRERA-4/4S (1998-2001)

This kit is built for the 996-generation Porsche 911 Carrera-4 and Carrera-4S (chassis code PO02), covering 1998 to 2001 – the early water-cooled 996 production run across both the standard-body C4 and the wider-body C4S. Confirm your chassis code before ordering: the 996 Carrera 2 uses a different front strut configuration and requires a separate fitment.
