XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Porsche 996 CARRERA-4/4S 1998-2001

The 996 Carrera-4 and Carrera-4S carry Porsche’s all-wheel drive system into the 911 bloodline, but the standard suspension was never conceived for loose-surface competition. At real rally pace on sandstone, snow or silt, the 996’s characteristically low ride height and road-biased damping geometry become active liabilities – the standard dampers simply cannot manage the severity and rate of inputs that a gravel stage delivers.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the Porsche 996 Carrera-4/4S is built for exactly that environment. An inverted-tube architecture provides long-stroke travel with correspondingly extended springs, giving the car the wheel movement and absorption capacity that gravel-stage competition demands. Spring rate settings were developed and verified by XYZ’s rally racing teams across the conditions the name implies.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2001 Porsche 996 CARRERA-4/4S

The Carrera-4/4S’s AWD system is a genuine asset on loose ground – but only when the suspension keeps the tyres working against the surface below. Inverted-tube construction holds unsprung mass low while stiffening the strut assembly against the lateral loads that peak during high-speed direction changes, where G-forces are most severe. Long-travel springs absorb the aggressive vertical inputs of a fast gravel stage, spreading impact forces before they transmit into the chassis and affect the car’s line. On events where conditions shift between snow, silt and packed sandstone within a single stage, the damping range allows mid-event adjustment rather than a fixed single-surface commitment from the start.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

Rally cross imposes more demand on a shock absorber than any other competitive surface discipline – a fact that sits at the core of the Gravel Rally unit’s design brief. Inverted-tube construction places the main body at the top of the assembly, building rigidity against the extreme G-forces generated during high-speed direction changes on loose terrain. Long-stroke dampers and extended springs work as a matched system, absorbing both the constant chassis vibration of high-speed rough-road running and the sudden hard landings that follow crests and compressions. XYZ’s rally racing teams have validated the spring rates across all three primary loose-surface types – sandstone, snow and silt – each presenting markedly different absorption requirements. For the 996 Carrera-4/4S, an all-wheel drive car built on a rear-engined 911 platform with very limited standard ground clearance, a shock absorber with genuine off-tarmac range is not optional equipment.

Fitment for the Porsche 996 CARRERA-4/4S (1998-2001)

This kit is built to chassis code PO02, covering the Porsche 996 Carrera-4 and Carrera-4S produced from 1998 to 2001 – the all-wheel-drive variants of the first water-cooled 911 generation. Both the standard Carrera-4 and the wider-bodied Carrera-4S are covered within this fitment. Confirm your production year falls within the 1998-2001 window before ordering, as later 996 variants sit under a separate application.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball top mountPillow ballPSolid pillow-ball (spherical bearing) upper — chosen for rigidity and precise camber adjustment, the sharpest steering response of the options.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
