XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Mazda RX7 FD3S 1991-2002

The FD3S RX-7 was already one of the most balanced chassis Mazda ever shipped – 50/50 weight distribution, double wishbones at all four corners, and a kerb weight under 1,300kg. What it was not built for was the kind of mid-corner kerb strike and surface change a tarmac stage throws at it. The Tarmac Rally coilover is the spec that lets an FD attack a closed-road stage without bottoming the lower wishbones or unloading the inside rear on camber changes.

This is the rally-biased end of the XYZ Racing range, set up for sealed-surface stages rather than gravel. Spring rates and damping are pitched higher than the gravel kit, lower than the circuit spec, with the travel and damper recovery a rotary-engined coupe needs when the road surface goes from billiard-table to broken patch repair inside a single corner.

What this coilover does for your 1991-2002 Mazda RX7 FD3S

Tarmac stages punish a stock FD’s damper travel – the OE Bilsteins were tuned for a road car and run out of shaft inside a few hard runs. The Tarmac Rally coilover gives the FD3S the body control to use its rear-steer geometry properly, so the chassis rotates on throttle the way the factory engineers intended rather than running wide on a tired damper. Ride height is adjustable independently of spring preload, which matters on an FD because the rear subframe sits low and the splitter is fragile. Damping adjustment lets you bias the car to the surface on the day – softer for broken asphalt, firmer for smooth sealed sections. The result is a car that puts the 13B’s narrow torque band down cleanly out of slow corners instead of scrabbling for grip on a kerb exit.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally sits in the rally half of the XYZ Racing catalogue, separated from the circuit-focused coilovers by spring rate, valving, and shaft travel. Construction is a monotube damper with a remote or piggyback reservoir depending on application, running on hardened seats and pillowball top mounts to remove the deflection a rubber top mount adds under stage loads. Spring rates are matched to the FD3S’s light front end and the weight transfer the rotary’s low centre of gravity allows. Damping is adjustable in multiple steps from a single knob, so you can run a softer setting for the recce and step it up for the stage itself. The kit is designed to be serviceable – dampers can be stripped, revalved and resprung as the car’s setup evolves.

Fitment for the Mazda RX7 (1991-2002)

This kit is built for the FD3S chassis, the third-generation RX-7 sold from 1991 through to the end of UK and JDM production. It covers Series 6, 7 and 8 cars – the spring perches and mounting points are common across the run. Verify your chassis code reads FD3S before ordering.
