XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — Mazda RX7 FD3S 1991-2002

The FD3S is a chassis that punishes lazy suspension choices. Light, mid-engined in feel thanks to the front-mid 13B-REW layout, and short of wheelbase, it pivots faster than owners expect and loses rear composure the moment the dampers give up – which on tired OE Bilsteins is most of the time in 2026. XYZ Racing’s Racing Spec coilover is built for FD owners who have already moved past "refresh the OE struts" and want a circuit-grade platform under the car.

This is the sharpest-edged kit in the XYZ range for the RX7, aimed squarely at track and time-attack use rather than fast-road duty. Spring rates, damper valving and ride-height window are set up for a car that will see kerbs, slicks or semi-slicks, and serious lateral g – not motorway commutes.

What this coilover does for your 1991-2002 Mazda RX7 FD3S

On an FD, the first thing you feel from a properly valved Racing Spec setup is the front axle staying flat through Druids-style off-cambers where the stock car wants to lean and then snap. Independent 30-way bump and rebound adjustment lets you slow the rear down enough to keep the diff loaded on power without making the car wooden on turn-in – the FD’s classic trade-off. Pillowball top mounts replace the rubber OE bushings, so steering inputs reach the tyre instead of being absorbed by 30-year-old elastomer, and camber becomes a setting rather than a wish. Ride height is adjustable independently of spring preload via the lower bracket, which matters on a car this low to start with – you keep useful shock stroke instead of running out of travel over kerbs. Combined, the kit gives the FD the body control its chassis always deserved and turns the rotary’s mid-corner balance into something you can actually exploit.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec is XYZ’s circuit-focused tier, sitting above the road-biased Super Sport and Street Advanced kits. Construction is a 52mm large-bore monotube with a separate piston and shim stack per damper, which is what gives it the heat tolerance to survive 20-minute sessions without fade. Springs are linear-rate and matched to the FD’s corner weights and stiff-chassis bias rather than a generic JDM-coupe baseline. Adjustment is 30 clicks of bump and 30 of rebound, independently – genuine four-way capability across the axle, not a single combined knob pretending to be two. Bodies are nickel-plated for corrosion resistance on UK roads, with hardened seats and threaded sleeves that still move after a winter of salt. The whole assembly is rebuildable and revalvable, so the kit is a long-term platform rather than a consumable.

Fitment for the Mazda RX7 (1991-2002)

Designed specifically for the FD3S chassis across the full 1991-2002 production run, covering Series 6, 7 and 8 cars (including JDM Spirit R and UK-spec imports). Front struts replace the original Bilstein-supplied units; rear uses the FD’s separate spring and damper layout with matched components. Pillowball top mounts are included front and rear.
