XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mazda MX-3 1991-1997

The MX-3 is a chassis that rewards patience. Light at the nose, narrow-tracked, and softly sprung from the factory, it leans hard on its outside front in a quick corner and runs out of damper travel long before it runs out of grip. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is built to sort exactly that – a fully height-and-damping-adjustable kit aimed at owners running their MX-3 on track days, hill climbs, and serious B-road driving.

For a 1991-1997 MA22 MX-3 – whether it’s a 1.6 four or the cult 1.8 K8 V6 – the Top Sport gives the platform the body control it was never going to get from a lowering spring on a tired OE damper. It tightens the front, settles the rear under power, and lets you actually exploit the sweet little V6’s mid-range without the car oversteering on its own bushings.

What this coilover does for your 1991-1997 Mazda MX-3

Installed and corner-balanced, the Top Sport transforms how the MX-3 loads up mid-corner. The 30-way damping adjustment lets you firm up rebound to stop the nose diving on hard braking into a hairpin, then soften compression for B-road work where surface changes matter. Ride height drops cleanly through the threaded lower mount rather than by compressing the spring, so you keep full damper stroke and the car still rides over expansion joints without crashing through.

Spring rates are matched to the MX-3’s kerb weight rather than borrowed from a heavier chassis, so the car turns in flatter without losing the underlying compliance that makes a 90s Mazda enjoyable to drive in the first place. Pad confidence improves too – a settled rear axle under trail-braking gives you something to lean the brake pedal against.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s track-and-fast-road tier, built around a monotube damper body with a separated piston and gas chamber to keep oil temperatures stable across repeated heat cycles. Damping is adjusted by a 30-click knob acting on both bump and rebound through a single needle, which keeps setup simple while still giving meaningful range between street and circuit settings.

Ride height is set on the lower bracket, independent of spring preload, so corner-weighting an MX-3 doesn’t cost you damper travel. Pillowball top mounts at the front sharpen steering response and remove the slop that develops in 30-year-old rubber OE mounts. The springs are matched-rate to the chassis, and the whole assembly is finished to handle British weather – anodised bodies, sealed bearings, and stainless adjusters that still move after a winter.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-3 (1991-1997)

This kit is built for the MA22 Mazda MX-3, covering the full 1991-1997 production run in both 1.6 four-cylinder and 1.8 K8 V6 trims. Front struts and rear shocks are supplied as a four-corner set with springs, top mounts, and the hardware needed for a direct OE-mount replacement on a standard MA22 chassis.
