XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mazda MX-3 1991-1997

The MA22 MX-3 has always been a quirky platform – a short-wheelbase 2+2 coupe with the K8 V6 up front, sitting on softly-sprung struts that were tuned for early-90s comfort more than gravel-stage discipline. On a loose surface, the standard car runs out of damper travel quickly, pitches under throttle, and washes wide the moment the front loads up. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built around fixing exactly that.

This is the rally-spec kit in the XYZ catalogue, set up for unsealed surfaces – forest stages, gravel specials, lane work – rather than circuit or fast-road duty. For a 1991-1997 Mazda MX-3 being campaigned or built for loose-surface use, it gives the chassis the travel, the damping authority, and the height to actually use the road underneath it.

What this coilover does for your 1991-1997 Mazda MX-3

Ride height comes up rather than down – gravel suspension needs travel, not slammed stance, and the kit is designed to be set higher than its tarmac siblings to clear ruts and crests. Damping is softer and longer in stroke than the Circuit Master or Super Sport, which lets the MX-3 absorb a hit and recover before the next one arrives instead of skipping across the surface. Body control under braking improves noticeably, and the front end stops diving into the bumpstops the second you load it.

The 30-way adjustment range matters more on gravel than anywhere else, because surface conditions change stage to stage; you can take damping off for a soft, broken stage and add it back for harder-packed roads without touching the spring perches.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s loose-surface specification, sitting alongside the Tarmac Rally, Pro Rally, and Circuit Master kits in the rally side of the range. The construction is the same monotube layout used across the XYZ line – a single high-pressure tube with a separated gas chamber – which keeps the damper consistent as oil temperatures rise across a long stage. Springs are softer than the tarmac kits, the damper stroke is extended for travel, and the top mounts and lower brackets are sized to take repeated heavy impacts without deflecting.

Damping is 30-way adjustable on a single knob covering both bump and rebound, so changes between service stops are quick. Spring rates and ride-height settings are specified for gravel use out of the box, with room to revise either if the build calls for it.

Fitment for the Mazda MX-3 (1991-1997)

This kit is built for the MA22-chassis Mazda MX-3 across the full 1991 to 1997 production run, covering both the 1.6 four-cylinder and the 1.8 K8 V6 cars. Strut layout is the standard MX-3 front strut and rear configuration – no chassis modifications are needed to fit the kit.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
