The E39 5 Series’ V8 puts real weight over the front axle, and on loose surfaces that weight transfers hard the moment the tarmac stops being smooth. The XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover is built around that exact problem: longer suspension travel front and rear gives the 540i’s chassis a bigger buffer against sudden compressions, so the car stays settled instead of crashing through its stroke on a rutted stage road or a snow-packed B-road.
This spec trades outright circuit stiffness for travel and thermal margin. The damper carries a larger internal oil and nitrogen gas volume than a tarmac-only setup, which is what keeps shock temperatures in check when a rally stage or a genuinely bad winter surface throws repeated hits at the unit over a long run rather than a single hot lap.
What this coilover does for your 1995-2003 BMW 5 Series
Fitted to an 8-cylinder E39 excluding Touring, the extra wheel travel gives the big saloon somewhere to put its weight when a wheel drops into a rut or a compression arrives without warning, instead of the front axle simply loading up and pushing on. The 3-way damping adjustment lets you back the compression off for a loose gravel surface, then firm it up again once the road (or stage) turns to something with more grip. Because the oil and gas capacity is bigger than a track-only design, the damper resists the heat build-up that would otherwise soften its response deep into a long stage or a slow, repeated-hit snow route. The result is a 5 Series that keeps its rear axle located and its steering honest when the surface underneath it is anything but predictable.
About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover
This is XYZ Racing’s rally and rallycross-oriented coilover, not a tarmac track spec, and the construction reflects that brief directly. Front and rear travel is extended beyond the standard Pro Racing range specifically to increase the buffer distance the suspension has before it runs out of stroke on rough ground. The larger oil and nitrogen gas volume is the other half of that brief: more fluid and gas means the shock has more thermal capacity to draw on, so oil temperatures stay controlled instead of spiking after sustained hard use. The unit uses a 3-knob adjustment layout with a small-oil-hole metering design; on sharp, repeated hits you may hear a faint noise through the valving as oil passes through that restricted passage, which is a normal characteristic of this design rather than a fault, and it is not something to worry about when the car is doing what this coilover was built for.
Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E39 (1995-2003)
This kit fits the E39-generation BMW 5 Series built between 1995 and 2003, specifically the 8-cylinder V8 models. It is not designed for the Touring (wagon) body style – saloon fitment only. Confirm your car’s engine and body variant against these details before ordering.

However you’re planning to use an E39 V8 off smooth tarmac, this kit is specced for that job from the ground up – configure yours below.
Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
