XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E39 8 CYL excl. Wagon 1995-2003

The E39’s V8 saloons – 540i and M5 alike – carry more than 1.7 tonnes over a double-pivot front axle and multi-link rear that BMW tuned for autobahn stability, not for the ruts, crests and washboard surfaces of a gravel special stage. Standard dampers on this chassis pack down after two or three hard compressions and let the nose dive into every braking zone the moment the surface turns loose.

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built for exactly that scenario. It replaces short-travel road damping with hardware designed to keep the E39’s V8 weight controlled through repeated high-speed impacts, not just the occasional pothole.

What this coilover does for your 1995-2003 BMW 5 Series E39

Fit this coilover to a 540i or M5-generation E39 and the change shows up first under braking into a loose hairpin: the extended stroke keeps the front axle working instead of bottoming out, so the car keeps turning in rather than ploughing straight on. Through fast, bumpy sections the long spring soaks up chassis vibration before it reaches the rest of the suspension geometry, keeping the tyre in contact with the ground on the kind of broken surface that would otherwise send this heavy saloon airborne. Under hard cornering load – where the E39’s mass transfers aggressively through the outside corner – the setup is built to bear that G-force without the spring rate collapsing mid-corner. The result is a car that stays composed lap after stage, even as the V8’s weight keeps punishing the same corners.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is a damper built specifically for rally and rallycross, where road conditions are consistently the harshest of any motorsport discipline. XYZ Racing uses an inverted tube design so the unit can be tuned to cope with the different surfaces a stage throws at it – sandstone, snow, silt – without the shock shaft losing control of the piston under contamination. Stroke length and spring length are both extended well beyond a road or track coilover, giving the damper room to absorb chassis vibration from high-speed, bouncy terrain and to bear the extreme cornering loads a rally car generates without topping or bottoming out. Every spring rate in the range has been set using data from an active Rally Racing team, so the baseline is calibrated against real stage running rather than a bench estimate.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E39 8 CYL excl. Wagon (1995-2003)

Built for the E39-chassis BMW 5 Series 8-cylinder saloons – 540i and M5 – produced between 1995 and 2003. This fitment covers the saloon body only; E39 Touring (wagon) variants are excluded and require a different kit.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
