The E38 7 Series was never built with loose surfaces in mind, but the V8 cars share the same long-wheelbase weight and soft factory air suspension that makes a gravel stage brutal on standard dampers. Once you strip the air struts out of the equation, that mass still has to be controlled over compression, sand and washboard ruts at speed, and the factory hydraulics simply weren’t specified for that. The Gravel Rally coilover replaces the air-strut setup on the 8-cylinder E38 with a damper built specifically for rally and rally-cross conditions.
This is a stage-focused kit, not a road setup dressed up for the brief. It exists to keep the front and rear axles planted and predictable when the surface underneath keeps changing without warning.
What this coilover does for your 1995-2002 BMW 7 SERIES E38 8 CYL (NOT AIR STRUT)
Removing the air strut in favour of a coilover gives the E38’s V8 cars a fixed, rally-tuned damping response instead of a self-levelling system that was never designed for stage work. The long stroke length in this design lets the axle travel further before it tops or bottoms out, which matters when a rut or a sudden compression arrives mid-corner rather than on a smooth apex. The long spring works with that stroke to soak up chassis vibration transmitted from broken surfaces, instead of feeding it straight into the body and the driver’s hands. Under hard cornering on loose ground the big BMW generates real lateral load through its weight, and this damper is built to bear that G-force without the wallow the standard hydraulic strut would introduce. The result is a car that stays composed when the road surface stops being predictable, which is the entire point of a stage car.
About the Gravel Rally coilover
XYZ Racing developed this damper specifically for rally and rally-cross use, where road conditions are the most aggressive of any motorsport discipline the brand builds for. The core of the design is an inverted-tube layout, chosen because it copes better with the changing surfaces a stage throws at a car – sand, snow, silt, and everything between. Stroke length and spring length are both extended beyond a road or track-day coilover, giving the damper the travel it needs to absorb chassis vibration and take the aggressive hits that come from bouncing across a high-speed loose surface. That extra travel also lets it deal with the extreme G-forces generated when turning on loose ground, where grip drops off suddenly rather than progressively. Every spring rate offered in this range has been set and validated by a rally racing team, not calculated on paper, so the rates reflect what actually holds up over a stage rather than a theoretical ideal.
Fitment for the BMW 7 SERIES E38 8 CYL (NOT AIR STRUT) (1995-2002)
This kit is built for the E38-chassis 7 Series across the 8-cylinder range from 1995 to 2002, specifically for cars fitted with conventional suspension rather than the factory air-strut setup – check which system your car has before ordering, as the two are not interchangeable. The Gravel Rally spec is matched to this chassis code and drivetrain layout rather than sold as a generic universal fit.

Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
