XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — BMW 7 SERIES E38 8 CYL (NOT AIR STRUT) 1995-2002

The E38 7 Series is a big car – over five metres of steel, a wide track, and if you’re running the V8 rather than the later V12, still north of 1800kg to manage through a fast direction change. That’s before track fuel, a passenger, and the fact that this fitment is specifically for cars on the conventional steel-spring set-up, not the factory self-levelling air strut option some E38s left the showroom with. The XYZ Racing Racing Spec coilover is built for exactly that scenario: serious track and time-attack use, where a car this size needs to stop rolling onto its outside wheel and start rotating instead.

Racing Spec sits at the top of the XYZ Racing range, and on a luxury saloon this heavy it earns the name – spring rates and damping curves that would be excessive on a lightweight hatch are closer to correct once you’re carrying E38 mass into a corner at pace.

What this coilover does for your 1995-2002 BMW 7 Series

Fit a Racing Spec set-up to an E38 and the first thing you notice is body control under trail-braking – a car that used to lean hard onto the front tyres on turn-in instead loads them progressively, which matters when you’re carrying 1995-2002-era V8 weight into a chicane. Ride height drops and the roll centre correction keeps the long wheelbase from pitching excessively under braking from big licence speeds down to apex. Damping adjustment lets you firm the front to control dive under braking without turning the rear into a pogo stick over kerbs – critical on a car this length, where the rear axle sits a long way behind the front and needs to stay planted through direction changes. The result on track is less time spent waiting for the chassis to settle and more time with the tyres loaded evenly, which on a saloon carrying this much mass is the difference between a car that merely goes fast in a straight line and one that actually rotates.

About the Racing Spec coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Racing Spec damper specifically for circuit racing, with valving and settings drawn from direct involvement in touring car competition including WTCC. It sits above the fast-road and semi-slick-biased tiers in the range and is calibrated for sustained on-track loads rather than daily-driver compliance – the spring rates and damper curves are set up for a car that’s going to be driven hard, repeatedly, across a full session. For heavily modified cars – E38s running aggressive engine, brake or aero upgrades similar to factory racing builds – XYZ Racing can produce a bespoke shock absorber specification once you supply details of what’s been changed on the car and which circuit you’re running. That custom-build route exists precisely because a heavily built E38 on slicks and big brakes doesn’t behave like a stock one, and off-the-shelf valving can’t always cover both ends of that range. Construction follows the coilover format used across the range, with ride height adjustable independently of spring preload and damping set to match the car and the session.

Fitment for the Bmw 7 Series E38 8 CYL (NOT AIR Strut) (1995-2002)

This kit is built for the E38-chassis BMW 7 Series, 8-cylinder V8 cars, across the 1995 to 2002 production run. It’s specifically for cars on the conventional steel-spring set-up, not the self-levelling air strut option some E38s left the factory with, so check which suspension your car has before ordering. Confirm your build year and V8 variant against your logbook if you’re unsure which chassis code applies.
