XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17) 1974-1985

The Mk1 Golf has always rotated on a trailing throttle – its light twist-beam rear axle and short wheelbase make it eager to pivot, which is exactly why these cars earned their stage-rally reputation. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built for that environment: loose, broken gravel where wheel travel and damper survival matter more than outright stiffness.

This is the dirt-stage specification, not a lowered fast-road kit. Long-stroke dampers and tall springs keep the Golf Mk1’s wheels planted over high-speed crests and washboard surfaces, soaking up the hits a 1974-1985 hatchback’s standard struts were never designed to take.

What this coilover does for your 1974-1985 Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17)

On a loose surface the gains are immediate. The long stroke gives the front struts room to extend into ruts and compress over jumps without bottoming, so the light front end keeps biting where a stock Golf Mk1 would skip and wash wide. The tall springs and inverted damper bodies resist the violent loads fed through the suspension when you commit to a fast gravel corner, holding the car flat enough to trust the rotation rather than fight it. Because the rates were set by a working rally team, the balance suits the Golf’s tail-happy nature: enough rear compliance to let it steer on the throttle, enough control to gather it back up. Over a rough stage the result is a car that tracks straight at speed and stays composed when the surface turns to sandstone, snow or silt.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally coilover is XYZ Racing’s dedicated dirt and rallycross damper, engineered around the harshest discipline in the sport. Rallycross surfaces punish a shock absorber harder than any tarmac event, so this kit uses an inverted-tube construction for the strength and rigidity those repeated impacts demand. The long-stroke, long-spring layout is the defining feature: it absorbs chassis vibration, lets the suspension attack high-speed bouncy roads, and carries the extreme cornering loads a gravel stage generates. The internals are developed to cope with varied terrain, since sandstone, snow and silt each load the damper differently and the valving is built to suit all three. Every spring rate in the kit was tested and signed off by XYZ Racing’s rally team rather than calculated on a spreadsheet, which is why this is sold as a stage-ready specification and not a styling drop.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
