The MK1 Golf rolls. On its standard struts a Type 17 leans hard into a quick corner, the inside rear wheel goes light, and the nose washes wide exactly when you want the front to bite. The XYZ Racing Circuit Master coilover for the Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17) is built to take that vagueness out of a 40-year-old chassis and give you a platform you can actually trust at racing speed.
This is the stiffest, most adjustable rung in the XYZ ladder, aimed squarely at sustained circuit lap-time work rather than the daily run to the shops. On a car this light – a MK1 barely troubles 850kg – controlling how the body settles matters more than sheer spring rate, and the Circuit Master hands you the adjustment range to get the front and rear working together.
What this coilover does for your 1974-1985 Volkswagen GOLF MK1 (TYPE 17)
Fit these and the first thing you notice is a flat, settled body through long corners, with the front end loading up cleanly instead of leaning onto its outside edge. With three separate adjustment knobs feeding into a claimed 9720 distinct damper settings, you can soften the rear to keep the MK1’s lift-throttle rotation playful, or firm it to calm a nervous tail on a fast circuit. Turn-in sharpens, the brake pedal feels more planted under hard stops, and ride height drops to put this hot-hatch icon over its arches the way it should sit. The control is consistent through a full track session rather than fading as the dampers heat soak.
About the Circuit Master coilover
The Circuit Master is XYZ Racing’s competition-grade damper, sharing its DNA with their Racing, Drift and Tarmac Rally specs and validated by XYZ race teams across international circuits. Its headline feature is breadth of adjustment: 9720 possible settings spread across three knobs, so compression, rebound and ride height can each be tuned independently to a given track and driver. The three-knob layout uses a small oil-passage design, which means that over sharp bumps the oil forced through the narrow port can produce a faint working noise – normal behaviour, and a non-issue on the smooth tarmac of a race circuit. This is hardware engineered for the track first, where bump compliance on broken roads was never the brief.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.
